time machine slow in 10.7.5

Running 10.7.5, over the past few days have been beachballed to the point where I can't force quit anything, and have to do a hard reboot (power down). Dot in Spotlight is on, and I am seeing similar durations to Time Machine backups (days, not hours, or minutes). Question - does upgrading to Mountain Lion solve the problems outlined in this thread?

Nice to see a little humor in one of these threads, it takes away a bit of the frustration. I started backing up 30 GB 24 hrs ago and it is at 17.72 GB now with the estimated time to complete in another 17 hours. Of course I don't put much faith in that since it was only to take 6 hrs when it first started. How much quicker would the process be if I connected my Mac directly to the Time Machine rather than wirelessly?

I have this problem too. Right now it is backing up at 100 MB per hour.

I had the same issue after upgrading to 10.7.5 (13" MBA late 2011, USB external drive for backup freshly formatted). backing up ~100Gbytes would take > 10 days.

I stopped it, used:

sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist

and now it went down to about 2 hours, which is pretty noraml.

Apple should fix this bug IMO, as disabeling Indexing is not an acceptable solution.

Is help on the way?

Nobody knows for sure, but I am thinking probably. Even though Lion is the old version of the OS, Mountain Lion does not run on a significant chunk of the installed base due to the decision to drop 32 bit EFI support and enterprise users often can't upgrade the OS quickly due to critical compatibility requirements. Lets hope these factors in combination with the "bad" publicity compel a fix.

I have the same problem since today (Imac 2012), with 10.7.5. This afternoon TM operates normaly, and tonight it's very slow (15 minutes to backup 2 Mo...)

That's why I use Intego Backup Assistant~it's easy & free! 🙂

After having downgrade to 10.7.4, the backup speed with TM is back to the usual state.

The 1st backup after the downgrade (clean install) was 66GB and time to do the backup a liitle bit more than 3h over wifi.

OK. It's obviously not my external harddrive from what I'm reading here. It sounds like it's the Lion 10.7.5 upgrade I just installed. Last night, I did a complete erase using Disk Utility. I deleted the Time Machine Preferences Panel. I set up a completely new Time Machine backup and when I woke up this morning after about 6 hours, only 8 GB of 179 GB were backed up and I only had 8 days to go.

Yes, I can confirm what others have posted here, Spotlight is a problem...

Since upgrading to 10.7.5 on the 19th of September, I haven't been able to do any full or partial backups at all! I tried various fixes, most notably over at http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html (all the fixes there) and even did the "sudo mdutil -a -i off" thing, which isn't the full Spotlight disable solution. It kept on getting hung up on the "Preparing backup" phase for DAYS!

Finally, I decided to take my Time Capsule off wireless and connect it to my iMac directly via Ethernet (a huge inconvience for me), did diagnostics on both the main and backup volumes and... voila... backups resumed past the preparing phase. However, it got hung up on 1.2GB of 25GB for over 12 hours. So, I did the full Spotlight disable with:

sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist

... and that enabled TM to backup 20GB of 30GB so far in 30 minutes, after doing a deep scan. I'm happy for the improvement over time, but I hope disabling Spotlight doesn't mean I won't be able to access my backups properly!

I really hope that Apple is listening to these forums and coming up with a solution to the problem. It's never a good thing to do such an obtrusive hack to the system to make it work properly and efficiently. =(

Unfortunately turning off spotlight is not an option for me. I use spotlight 100X more often on my MacBook than I use google maps on my iPhone, that is before it got canned by Apple.
