Q: time machine slow in 10.7.5

FWIW, after applying the Supplemental Update, System Information shows 10.7.5 (11G63) The problematic build was 11G56. Presumably Software Update will serve the latest build.

Yep, applying Supplemental Update (11G63) worked like a charm for me.

Worked for my system too. 

Eureka!!! The update works.

Installed and restarted. Spotlight took 31 minutes to index 149GB (I'd moved a huge inventory of files onto an external drive so as to help Spotligh recover). TM completed its first incremental backup of 673MB in 18 minutes. The second incremental was only 17MB and it zoomed ahead at lighting speed, completing in a few seconds.

A vote of thanks to everyone contributing to this thread over the past week. It has been a gruelling effort, trying all of the recommend workarounds, downloading various utilities, and the relentless pressures on Apple to find a fix. It has been a learning experience gleaning from the tidbits of advice and contributions from a lot of smart people. Your endeavors have proven that communities like this really work. I'm very happy to be a part of it and to be able to contribute my two cents worth now and then. Now we can rest until the next challenge.

Why are people eat every apple from apple even when it is so rotten. Apple make a mess of 10.7.5 its really amazing. And apple doesn't announced anything. It is a big rotten apple. And apple has priority as windows had decades ago. Microsoft learned from their mistakes. Will apple also do!?? The problems in 10.7.5 are enormous, a few of them:

1. time machine is so slow that using it is useless

2. spotlight indexing is like a joke..it will take years

3. in finder lots of attributes dont work anymore

4. copying files was always a problem but now it is rotten also

I dont get it that apple customers accept all this. And they (apple) go on with making money and do less.

In a short time they make a mess of it. It is also very arrogant the way they just excluded thy ipad1 from ios 6. I dont see the arguments other then irritating their customers and hoping they will buy a new one. It is terrible coz application update will make apps useless for the ipad, without knowing or tell the dear custoomer anything.

I have only one tip buy asap put options. Coz even one rotten apple wil make the whole load of apples smelling bad  in a short time.

Ok..the update seems to work...but apple knew it longer and they didnt warn for the rotten update. Many people were wrestling a long time with a lot of issues. Ok, i test it know...but it seems to that the finder issues were not solved. Something simple as copying in one action and if it fails w the last file after 30 minutes all is gone. We are back in the 90's..the wonderfull windows experiences....

I presume we have to enable spotlight before doing this additional patch...

I've installed the update, re-enabled spotlight; the estimated indexing time still seems far higher than it should be... 6 hours for 128GB on a 2011 MacBook AIr with an OWC 6G SSD.  Not impressed.

Dr Moe's /var/folders fix worked for me. I've been creating a spotlight index 700gb and a TM backup of about  overnight en route and it worked. Thanks for that. I'll install Apple's tardy update and see how it goes. Thanks for all the useful tips. I tend to agree with the general sentiment that Apple has lost its edge and its heart. It happened before Jobs left the planet too.

I applied the Supplemental Update and Time Machine started again to work regularly as expected.

However for some reason (possibly not related to this Apple bug... not sure) Spotlight didn't work: it just ran for many hours "praparing to index" or similar, without any progress and displaying no expected time.

After 8 or so hours with no progress at all I used Spotless (4.0.0) to remove the index and enable Spotlight again.

This seems to work: Spotlight has not finished yet but at least it progresses and now it has 2 hours left.

Looking at the Activity Monitor I can see mds and mdworker running at almost full speed; in Spotless window I see the index size changing (generally increasing, but strange enough in at least one case it also shrinked...)

robido, this situation is extremely unpleasing and several people have protested, look at the forums here and in the whole world (wide web). Also, I believe that thousands bug reports have been filed thus making fixing this a priority for Apple.

And, yes, I believe that SW QC has decreased at Apple.
