Is it possible to remove downloaded but uninstalled ios 6 from iphone 4?

I recently bought an 8GB iphone 4 and yesterday i got a software alert for ios 6. I didn't intend to download it but I must have pressed something to make it happen. I haven't installed it yet; I would like to remove the download and stick with ios 5. Is that possible?

The download is meaningless. All IPSW since first iPhone can be downloaded from Apple for free right now. Downloaded means it is on your computer harddrive. If you decide to install it, you must click the Restore or Update buttons of iTunes to do so. The only iOS for the iPhone 4 that can be installed with Apple approval is iOS 6. So if you update or restore you will be at iOS 6. Apple will not approve of installing anything else once you have gone to iOS 6 on your iPhone.

That is TOTALLY irrelevant to the question.

The issue/question (the same one I have here) is that (somehow) my iphone and ipad have both downloaded the new iOS6 software to my iphone and ipad - NOT to my computer.

I did not want to download it in the first place and I do NOT want to install it. I wish to stay on the iOS5 software that is currently working quite well.

Question - how can it be deleted from my iphone and from my ipad? That is the only question.

It has not been installed, only downloaded and is available for install.

An ancillary question - how can I disable the "autodownload" feature for iOS software. Tip - Don't tell me about the General / Store / Automatic Downloads setting. It is not that.

198 other features? Sure....

An analogy..... I have a car which I take in for service, They put in an improved radio, rotate the tyres, change the oil, polish the hood etc. Then, to "help" me they remove the headlights and install two candles instead. "see" they say, "isn't that wonderful". "and in a couple of years we really think our candles will be as good as the old headlights".

I totally love my iPhone, iPad, iPod, Macbook pro, iMac, Macbook Air.

But, I am sorry to say I detest Apple maps. The emporer has no clothes!

I am in the same situation. iOS6 has "automatically" downloaded on my phone (taking up valuable HD space) and I would like to remove/delete it. I just want to keep the google Maps feature (particularly w/ Street View, which you cannot get via the website version using Safari browser). Now the iphone has a constant red alert (1) reminder on my general settings icon.

Anyone have a solution? Thanks!

This is seriously not cool. This happened to me too in OS 5.1.1 and I just spent the whole ----ing day troubleshooting what could be taking up 2.5 GB (same size for me too) of "other" data. I've deleted apps, emptied trash folders in mail, deleted caches, even wiped all my music because for some reason whenever I sync, iTunes thinks I have an extra GB or two of music, pushing me over capacity.

So I tried to restore to get rid of the extra weight, but I'm not even allowed to restore the OS version I'm ALREADY RUNNING. Now I see that this update I never wanted or allowed is holding my phone hostage. To borrow the car analogy, it's like you buy a car, it's working fine, then one day all but the driver's seat is full of sandbags you can't remove. They're bogging down the car and limiting what you can do, but your only choice is to take it in to the dealership and make a one-way trade for whatever the dealer feels like giving you instead. HOW ABOUT JUST LETTING ME USE WHAT I ----ING BOUGHT?

This is untenable. Even though I have a really large investment in iOS over the years, I think it's time to walk away. If Apple can't even respect their users' wishes and instead insist on hijacking their devices despite their preferences, then Apple products are no longer a viable choice. We're paying top dollar for devices we can't even PRETEND to own. I'm not crazy about the competition, but if there isn't a good solution for this, they give me no alternative but to walk.

That's not actually true. There is no WiFi update option on the summary page, but I've had WiFi sync disabled ever since they added the feature - the update downloaded automatically anyway. I manually manage everything. I don't allow any kind of installations or updates without explicit permission, but it seems now there's no option regardless of settings.
