Now backing up to my 2TB Time Machine.

Details are EVERYTHING. Since they pinpoint both the cause and remedy.

When you say " 2TB Time Machine", what you mean? Time Machine is an application, not a device. "2TB" would imply a device (drive). Whether this is a drive hooked up directly via say, Thunderbolt or at the other end of the speed spectrum, wirelessly, can make all the diffference.

Are we to assume you really mean a 2 TB Time Capsule?

If so, are you backing up over a wireless network? If this is the case, then Time Machine's calculation is based on the current connections speed, at that moment. Check your network connection speed, and it may explain the extended time required.

Yes it is a 2TB Time Capsule, wirelessly (Airport Extreme [not Airport Express] {Thanks, Apple}) connected to MBP.

Now down to "about 10 days".

I do not know how to check "connection speed".

And what are loading bars? On "Time Machine Backup" window, the shaded part is about 1-2% of the entire bar. On Time Machine System Preferences, shaded portion is barely visible with "9.76GB of 982.15GB"

I am of "The Computer for the Rest of Us" generation . . .

I know how to Repair Disk Permissions using Disk Utility. Is that what you mean?

Yes.

Also, if this is your first backup after updating then it will take much longer. This is normal. I usually let it do the first backup over night while you're sleeping. Keep in mind how huge your hard drive is and how much 'area' is has to cover to perform this task. This isn't a 2 gig hard drive (which in itself is big) but much larger being a full 2 TB. It will take some time for the head to scan everything on the drive the first time.

Thank you, on your advice I did just now repair permissions via Disk Utility.

Yes, this my first backup after installing the new OSX and I did erase the Time Capsule before starting the backup. I have shut down most everything (external HDs and unnecessary apps).

Should I not have erased the Time Capsule after installation?

Could I have connected Time Capsule via ethernet, usb, or FireWire and made the backup faster (rather than using wireless connection)?

The MBP can run the rest of the day, overnight, and part of tomorrow, or should I start over with one of these faster connections from MBP to Time Capsule?

TIA

Now it has to start over from scratch. Since this is going to take a while make sure you don't rely on battery power. I think firewire is your best bet if you can use that, but it will depend on your wireless connection speed. Just compare both of them and use the fastest one.

Thank you again:

"....And even though 802.11n rates at 300 Mbps compared to wired Fast Ethernet at 100 Mbps, the Ethernet connection can often outperform 802.11n Wi-Fi in real-world usage."

So looks like I stay with current method overnight into tomorrow (I can watch college football most of day - USC vs Cal & UCLA vs Oregon State), or wipe the Time Capsule and go with ethernet or FireWire with latter being my "best bet."
