iPad VPN doesn't work after iOS 6 upgrade

iPad 3 VPN (PPTP) just spins "connecting"
What I have tried that did NOT help:

1. rebooting (about 10 times)
2. changing WiFi connections - many different ones including 3G. The WiFi works but the VPN doesn't.
3. Changing the date and time to manual and advancing the date x 1 yr.

4. Putting in a new VPN connection (same old settings that previously worked - before iOS 6 upgrade)

5. Turning ON airplane mode.

Would appreciate any help or suggestions. Anything to save a trip to the A store.

Having the same issue here but I can't confirm if it is an iOS issue or a Mountain Lion Server issue. I have the VPN server configured on the ML Server and I can connect from a MacBook Pro running Mountain Lion using the VPN client in the Network pane. With the exact same settings I cannot connect using an iPad running iOS 6. I have enabled both L2TP and PPTP and tried both from the iPad with no success. The L2TP simply reports no response from server and the PPTP shows 'Starting' then 'Authenticating' before reporting 'Unable to authenticate'.

Seems like it's not just me. I will see if I can find someone with iOS 5 and try to get into the server using the VPN client in iOS 5. If I can then it points to a problem in iOS 6. If I cannot, then is suggests an underlying problem in iOS generallty or a problem in ML Server. Will let you all know when I know more.

Anthony, do have someone else check, as your situation sounds different from mine. For me, I can connect with the same settings from all my other devices (ipad 2, iphone 4, iphone 5) as well as my laptop, just not with the ipad 3 since upgrading it to the ios 6 gold master.

On the server side, my boss tells me he can see me authenticate, so the issue is with the authentication making it back to the device and being recognized.

No amount of resetting has helped me, I am afraid I will have to backup and factory wipe the device and start over.

OK guys here is the easy fix to the IOS6 upgrade VPN problem on the iPhone. I work for a large company and we had this issue. Here are the steps to fix. It is easy.

go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calenders > Exchange > Account (whatever your account name is) > Server (The servere name needs to be changed, just add ios6- to the begininng of what ever you have there, no spaces) so be sure to put the - after the ios6-

After you do this it will have to re-sync, but should IOS6 compatible now. worked company wide for us.

I called apple for support and it seems that the MacBook and iPad do different things. Number one on the server side is to make sure you have created an Open Directory. Users must be local network users to access services from outside the server's local network. Number two is to ensure that the VPN User exists. This user should be created by the system and should be visible in the User's pane when Show All Users is selected. Lastly, make sure IP port 47 is open and if required, forwarded to your server from the network router. Without this the iPad does not seem to be able to negotiate a connection.

Last thing, the VPN host should be the same name as the server hostname or a DNS lookup will not match.

All this pushed the limits of my OS X Server knowledge so I might invest in a good third party manual on ML Server, just to better understand Open Directories and how the server handles users. Hope this helps. Post questions if you need a better explanation.

Wittmiera, that was the trick that finally did it for me. I removed the sim and was able to connect. I then put the sim back in and, with cell data still turned off, was able to connect again. I then turned cell data back on and again was able to connect. so you should be safe to plug your sim back in.

I have noticed that, unlike my ipad 2 with ios 5, my ipad 3 on ios 6 does not keep the ATT bars display up when I turn on cell data; note that I do not have a cell account on either device. I suspect something may be wrong with the sim, or ios 6 does not bother to display the cellular bars if you do not have an account enabled.

I wish there was a way to verify that cell communication was working even without an active account. If anyone knows a tip (maps location?), please post.

I think the issue with buffering and reordering of received packets on iOS6.

The packages are confused because are multirouting paths through 3G.
