I have the same thing, definitely the lock button. It rattles whenever i set the phone down or pick it up, also if you shake it lightly. I didn't think it was going to bother me until my phone was just sitting on my bed and I got a text, I heard the rattle from the vibration.
Just called customer support, they set me up an appointment and just said take it in and they should replace it.

The 8mp camera has free floating lenses in order to autofocus. This is what you are hearing. It is very noticeable on the 4s but not as much on the 4 due to it being 5 mp. It funny to see all of these posts showing up on the day of the release but unfortunately I have to say I expected the issue to continue into the 5. It's annoying as **** but I have looked at plenty of top android phones with the same issue.
If you want to test the camera as the source open the camera app and go to take a pic of something close. Don't take the photo but instead press and hold on the screen and it will lock the autofocus. Now tap the back and you shouldn't hear the rattle. If you do it's not the camera it's something else but my bet would be its resolved.
4s and the 5 are such great phones but I agree with all of you that such an expensive phone shouldn't rattle.
The most frustrating thing is the "geniuses" claim to know nothing about this. It's amazing what a little research can do. They don't want to look at their own forums.
So here's how it's going to go when you bring your phone to replace it. They will claim they have never heard of this issue and its not a wide spread problem. They will say its probably the lock button or the vibration motor. Or if you go to the apple store they will say they can't hear it since it is so loud in there. If you call them they will say it shouldn't rattle and offer a replacement. Sow them the locked autofocus test. Just be prepared that the replacement phone will more than likely have the same issue. If it doesn't it will eventually.
I don't have a 5 still have a 4s but just from all the research, tests, talking to apple this doesn't seem to be an issue that will ever go away. Well not until apple admits there is an issue and releases a position on it.

Its not the camera lense, the switch or any of the buttons! This is a loud "thud" not a rattle.
New out of the box my iPhone 5 had something loose that would would make a thud when moving the phone from side to side. I opened it up and discovered that the battery was not firmly pressed into its adhesive. After pressing down the battery the iPhone is solid and silent, hopefully it remains this way, but I have my doubts since the adhesive was exposed to air while the battery was not firmly attached.
As most people do not have the tools to perform this repair, a pentalobe screwdriver, I recommend bringing the phone to your local genius bar for repair.
I made a video of the before and after... You'll probably have to turn up the volume to hear it, but it is very loud in person.
Update to my previous post:
Made an appointment for the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store 55 miles away. Spoke with someone there who assured me they would be able to exchange my iPhone 5. Soonest appointment available was 3:40 p.m, though I am going to be there at 10 a.m., hoping I can get in sooner. Will post the results.
Needless to say, I was extremely excited to order my iPhone 5 and anxiously awaited its arrival. Now, it has turned into a hugely disappointing ordeal :-(
As for the rattling lock button, I just got back from my appointment at the Genius Bar. He started by feeling my lock button then showing me about 5 other iphone 5's, 3 of which were rattling like mine and 2 of which were very firm, which i like.
He then proceeded to tell me how there is no difference and how he can replace the phone once for this issue but is not allowed to open multiple boxes until he finds one "that i like". So after he came back with the new one, he told me how one of their employees noticed her phone rattling and how she claims it is a 50/50 shot on getting a looser or tighter one.
Of course, the replacement they gave me rattles more than the first one. I tried to explain how it's not as much as a "feel" of looseness as the sound it makes in a quiet environment when you pick up your phone, or set it down, or even sometimes when you get a text, it rattles from the vibration.
It's a shame that I paid $200 dollars for this phone, as well as owning a Macbook Pro, iPad 2, and iPod Touch, and they can't do anything about this. Guess I'll just have to live with my maraca phone for the next two years
Here's my story after visiting the Apple store today:
I informed them that my Black iPhone 64GB had a 'rattle' (easily audible when you tap the front lower left corner or right upper left corner) and they swapped it on the spot.
I opened the new phone and it had two scratches on the back.
I exchanged it again and opened the next phone in store and it had a chip on the bottom bezel.
At this point they didn't have any more 'new' iPhone 64GB Black models; however, they had what they call 'service replacements'. Since the iPhone 5 is still new all of the replacements are not refurbished so they spent some time in the back finding one with any cosmetic defects and I walked out of the store fairly happy.
Only two remaining 'issues':
1) All of the phones had the 'rattle' so this is not a defect but something the phone just does - they seemed to say that it is the vibration motor inside that does this but who knows (time will tell) and,
2) I'm wondering if I should swap for a White model - 'Scuff Gate' is definitely an issue and I don't know if the Black model is going to age very well...
My iPhone 5 makes a thud when I give the phone a light shake. The physics of it feels like a loose battery. Future shop where I picked it up yesterday says it is a defect they will swap it but are out of stock. Took 15 hours to sync I spent couple more getting signed up, six hours to activate looks like I have to start all over again. Thanks.
Apple is slipping. These quality control issues did not appear in the flashy videos they used to promote this product. Outside finish with microtolerances on the outer shell don't mean a thing if a company can't afford to put the insides together properly.
And where are the spare USB plugs? Brand new power cord, going to need a couple...oops, not available come back....er, mmmm... soon? No one seems to know when.
Should have been plenty available at time of launch. Looks like sloppy work all around.
