iPhone 5 yellow tint screen!?

While visiting the Las Vegas area, I purchased an iPhone 5 (black, 64GB) at one of the local Apple stores. I returned the first one the same day after finding two dead pixels and I returned the second one the next day because the screen had a more yellow tint compared to my old iPhone 4. Deep blues also appeared purple. This third phone had the same color tint issue, but so did other phones in the store, so I thought it must just be the way the new iPhone display looks. After reading this thread, I'm not so sure any more, and in several apps now I find the yellowish coloring to be very noticeable and undesirable.

Within the next few days I'm going to compare the phone to those of a couple of friends traveling in the same group with me. If their iP5s don't look as yellowish as mine, I'll have good reason to simply get my money back and try ordering a phone from apple.com when I get back home.

NOTE:

If you have this issue, here's a suggestion to compare your phone to others. Go to the app store, search for the expedia app, and go to that app's page in the store. The icon looks like a yellowish-brown, wood-grain suitcase, and on my iPhone 5 it seems much more yellow with less richness. Also, look in the collage of images below the icon. The second icon down on the left looks up at a hotel, and on my iP5 the sky looks quite purple compared to a rich blue color on my iP4. I don't have a separate camera with me to snap a side-by-side, but below is the image of the Expedia app page.

I'd love to see side-by-sides from others showing that app page on your iPhone 4 vice an older iPhone. Do you see the same difference I mentioned above?

I had the same problem, I bought a new iPhone 5 black with yellow tint issue, yesterday (after 10 days waiting) I've received another iPhone with the same issue! Actually Apple support is saying me that my device is not able to get another substitution, because the yellow tint is not a fault!

How can I do? I don't want a device with yellow screen!

You know, I think this is actually a non issue. I believe that the screens are simply warmer in newer devices than in the older ones. I've had iPhone 5 now for over 2 months and have become completely accustomed to this warmer look. It almost makes the older phones look kind of cheesy.

Also, you'll notice if you turn the screen brightness up a notch, you will get a much more blue screen.

Overall, I don't think this us a defect, rather than just a newer technology. Of course if your screen is super yellow, uneven and blotchy, that would be a defect.

Research has also shown that the blue light emitted by HDTVs, computers etc, cause sleep disturbance when viewed prior to bedtime - and let's face it, many of us are laying around with our phones, iPads etc, right until we fall asleep.

I really honestly,don't notice the difference anymore - perhaps it does normalize after a period of time.

Oh, and I had wanted to add, when I first got my iP5, like you guys, I was really bothered by what looked like a yellowish tint. I hated it in fact, googled it and found this discussion as well as others. But, after 2 months, I do believe that it has got better -honest! After 2 months, the screen is clear, crisp, and definately less yellowish. It is still somewhat warmer than my old phone, but definitely NOT unattractive. Perhaps the glue theory is correct, but it takes maybe longer to "cure" than what we heard? I know that I went from "this is unacceptable!" to really loving it! I did fool around a bit with turning the auto screen way up and then letting it dim down etc. All in all, it seems to have improved. Anyone I've shown it to, does NOT see a yellow tint at all, and tell me I'm nuts haha. So be patient.

I honestly think you just dealing with it because you have no other choice but to return it. The color is hideous and for the price you pay you should not just accept it and live with it. It probably did not get better your eyes just got used to see the screen everyday. However im not paying hundreds of dollars for a phone that is made with a cheap display. I do not just accept it and live with it. If you do then its cool for you i retuned it and ill keep returning it until I get an acceptable unit

I get what you're saying, butI do feel that it did get better, but then it never looked as bad as some of the shots I've seen here. I guess it is possible that it's an eye adjustment thing but i dont think so. It is kind of subjective so I can't really prove it, but as I have said, when I ask friends to check out

my screen they say they don't see any yellow tinting.

Just trying to offer some hope because I feel it could be a glue curing issue and thus get better with time. I do maintain, though, that if it is seriously yellow, or blotchy, as opposed to just a slightly warmer tone, I'd run it by a Genius.

With the iphone in lanscape (in app email, sms, safari or similar with some white backgroud) anyone notice the screen with a brown hue on the side of the camera facetime.

I don’t believe in the »glue-theory«. The industry uses UV-adhesives that cure within one second. Why should Apple use an adhesive that is yellow for months and then changes it’s color?

You became used to the yellow background color of your screen, I suppose.

I followed the yellow screen threads for months now and this is my summary:

-All iPhone 5 have warm, yellowish displays. It stands out against blue-ish displays (iPhone4, iPad 1 f.e.).

-The tone differs between phones, but it is always on the warm side (again against the blue-ish displays)

-The iPod Touch 5G also has has the same display.

-The iPad 4 also has a similar color tone.

-All new yellow displays have more vibrant, deeper colors than the old blue-ish displays.

This is my conclusion:

-To achieve the vibrant deep colors, all new displays seem to share the yellowish whites as a trade-off.

-You won’t find a perfectly white iPhone 5, iPad 4, only variations of the warm tone.

-I reported the issue directly to an Apple engineer, so Apple is aware of the »effect«.

-I checked approx. 50 iPhone 5, you may only get slightly different warm screens, never blue/white.

If all the screen had the same tone i was happy, but my iphone 5 screen is not uniform (the top is darker / brownish)..... like the first ipad 3 screens

I am based in the UK and, big surprise, my iphone 5 has a yellow screem.

I had the phone replacec but same issue. when I compare with the other iphone 5 on display at the store (putting my phone side by side with them, they do not have the yellow tint like my phone.

Apple genius offered to replace the phone again but say that will be the end of it even if the screen color tint issue is there.

I phone Apple customer support a few days ago, and they told me that apple store should replace my phone until I am satisfied with the display.

However, since apple store genius say that this is not a fault, I there is nothing else they can do, even though they recognized that the iphone displays are manufactured by 2 different company and one manufactured by one company has that yellow tint and not the other. I find it hard to believe that they cannot find out with the serial number which iphone screen was manufactured by the company which does not have the display issue.

The other way of dealing wioth this would be to jailbreak my phone and calibrate the screen with a thrd party tool, but then my warranty would be void, right ?

What is my recourse ?

Are you sure screen display has 2 different manufacturers?!

This statement can explain a lot of questions...

Please try this test:

- put the brightness to maximum (not a prerequisite)

- drop down the notification window (so now screen is gray)

- look at the iPhone vertically just in front of the eyes

- now tilt it to the right (so as to view it sideways) and then to the left

Screen seems blue tilting to the left, yellow to the right,

this happens to me.

Not sure I understand your point. You say I have to tilt the screen sideway in order to get the right color. Doesn't seem right to me. This is not how the device is intended to be used. I have read in several forums that Apple does used to Manufacturers to manufacturing to display. That information was actually concerned maybe Apple genius where Arbroth my going to be replaced. If this is not considered as a defect I do not understand why Apple is not providing the calibrating tool to calibrate the screen. But, anyway, I have decided to log a complaint to Apple about this because I am not satisfied. The display should not have that yellow content.

There's not a right colour because it changes tilting the device, I finally think these display are not so good as Apple says. I would like to know if this issue is a device or supply chain fault, but Apple won't ever be clear about this problem.
