Lightning cable that came with iPhone 5 won't charge

Waited in line since 4am to get my iPhone only to bring it home and try to to restore from iTunes when I find out I got a bad cable. When I plug it into an outlet it won't charge and when I plug (even just the USB end) into my laptop, it gives me an error saying there's too much power in the USB port and auto-disconnects it. My friend let me try his and it worked fine both ways, so it's definitely a bad cable. Too bad they're not carrying them for the next few days....

Hope this isn't a widespread issue.

Final update: I did get my hands on another lightning cable from a friend and it worked fine with my phone. Today I went to the apple store for my replacement apt and they took the initial failed cable and phone swapping for new/replacement units. Back up and running in minutes and folks in the store were great. Clearly they have some issues with at least a small number of lightning cables that shipped with the iPhone 5. I'd suggest anyone with any charging issues seek a replacement. I'd hate to see what would happen if anyone with a short like mine was plugged into the wall and left unattended.

Like at least one other poster, my cable only charges when plugged into the phone with a certain side of the plug facing up.

Do those with more knowledge than me (basically anyone!) :-) think it is OK to live with this situation, or is it best to get a new cable? I don't know whether this is just a quirk or indicative of bigger problems with the cable or phone.

Thanks Ath3rs, I appreciate your taking the time to reply.

I was afraid that might be the answer. I ordered my phone right from the Apple website, so I guess I'll give Apple a call. Due to the nature of my job and family responsibilities lately it's very hard for me to find the time to wait on hold, so here's hoping I get through sooner rather than later.

After I call Apple I'll do a quick report back on my experience, so others in the same situation can get a sense of what they might expect if having to call in to Apple about this cable problem.

I called 1-800-MY-APPLE and had a wait time of less than 5 minutes. The rep I spoke with seemed surprised to hear of a problem with the cable, but apologized for any inconvenience and immediately offered to replace it. He gave me the option of replacing it either via a Genius Bar appointment at an Apple store, or by shipping me a new cable (which would take 3-5 business days, at least in my case).

I opted to go to the Apple store as there is one nearby, and while still on the phone with me the rep made me an appointment for later today at the exact time I wanted. He said if there was any problem dealing with the store (e.g., long wait) then he would note for my file that I may call back and asked that a cable be shipped directly to me instead.

So, I have the inconvenience of having to make a trip to the Apple store, but (hopefully) a relatively quick resolution to the problem. Hope this gives others some idea of what to expect if they encounter the same issue with the cable.

Hello i had the same problem... No charging and no synching under 80% of battery life. I was forced to turn off the iphone and plug it in order to get it recognized by itunes.

So the day after i decided to call apple support. i had to wait for 20 mins and the guy told he had never heard about this problem before so he advised me to go in the nearest apple store and to get my iphone changed.

Later i noticed that in the picture application there was the image of a flash code (do not ask me why it was already there when i swithed on my iphone 5 for the first time), i thought it wasn't normal so decided to re install the Os.

I can tell now that the cable works perfectly and my iphone is synching and charging (and that flashcode image has disapeared as well).

So guy try to re install the os this may work as it did for me
