@HuskieN, I appreciate your attempt to do Apple's job and provide solutions for users, but your solutions are by far inferior to what we had before:

- The alternatives you've mentioned--Waze, MapQuest, don't offer a Public Transport option for people who rely HEAVILY on public transportation.

- There is an I-Transit add-on that is supposed to work with the new Maps feature, but: it uses a time-table, not a real-time feature. Most people who use public transportation know that time-tables are not so reliable; it does not provide turn-by-turn directions once you get off your bus or train; it doesn't include the gps function; it doesn't include streetview; it's clunky and inefficient. Who has the time or patience to tap through five pages to get a service that they could get in one page before the "upgrade"?

HuskieN and others, it may not seem like a big deal to you, but for some people (like me) this was their sole purpose for getting an I-phone.

Your alternatives have already been described elsewhere in this thread. And it's highly unlikely that Tim Cook is reading this thread, and certain won't respond. If you want to comment to Apple, use the feedback pages:

You're just preaching to the choir here and aren't saying anything that hasn't been said multiple times already.

i don't know why people are continuing to try and offer "workarounds" to a problem that was solved years ago.

it's kinda like

"i'm sorry we have taken away your calculator which you payed good money for.. now here.. use this abacus and a pen and paper"

get a grip guys.

could one of the users not looking to score apple brownie points post a useful "downgrade to ios5.1" help link?

People are trying to offer you workarounds and alternatives to try and help you, because that's all anyone here can do. What do you expect of us, your fellow users, if not to suggest alternatives? No one here can magically improve the iOS 6 Maps app, nor can we magically make the former Google maps app reappear or get Google to release an app through the iTunes Store one minute earlier. HuskieN took a lot of time to research alternatives and make the suggestions. If they don't work for you, that's certainly your perogative to decide, but to denigrate such efforts is inconsiderate to those who've made the attempt.

If you just want to rant, use Apple's feedback pages. Continuing to complain here does no good whatsoever and just wastes your time, since you feel that none of the alternatives suggested will work for you.

No one here is trying to score "brownie points" - Apple doesn't care and certainly doesn't award "brownie points" - and characterizing posts as such is insulting.

And if you'll notice, the Hosts will remove any direct instructions or links to instructions on downgrading, since such procedures are not supported by Apple and so not considered appropriate posts for the forums. If you want instructions, do a web search for "iOS downgrade". Note that you're completely on your own should you attempt it; should problems arise, you may well not be able to get support from Apple.

Good luck.
