iPhone 5 Touchscreen Problems

Just unboxed the iPhone 5 and for the most part it's great. But one big problem has been occurring with the touchscreen, which I've heard is new (integrated with the display itself versus a separate capacitive layer as in past iPhones). I'm curious if anyone else has been having this issue or has any suggestions on what to do...


The touchscreen acts up by "sensing" my finger even when it's not actually touching the screen, but is just very close. This happens gradually at first, then it seems to get a little worse, requiring me to use more exaggerated gestures to actually get the phone to do what I want it to do. Eventually the phone will just respond to my hand waving above it even several millimeters above the screen, and seems to go haywire. It starts missing the letter/button that I'm trying to type. Sometimes the whole screen freezes to where I can't swipe to unlock, slide between home screen pages, etc. Although the physical buttons like the home button and standby button do seem to still respond despite the touchscreen being messed up or frozen, it doesn't get rid of the problem when I go back to what I was doing.


Eventually, I end up resetting the phone by holding down both the standby and home buttons simultaneously for a few seconds. When the device powers on again, it seems to have done the trick and the touchscreen is back to normal. However, the problem reoccurs with a fairly high/annoying level of frequency. (I mean I've only had the device for a few hours total and it's already happened at least half a dozen times.)


Has anyone else experienced this? Does this sound like I have a lemon or could this be a general issue? I wonder if it can be fixed with a software patch or if I need a replacement screen/device. Pretty frustrating to deal with right out of the box, and I don't really want to go anywhere near an Apple Store today with all the craziness that's probably taking place...

My phone was totally frozen right out the box. It took 2 hours to setup because it keep freezing up. I don't know what happen but I charge it up last night got up this morning to take it back to get my thunderbolt turned back on and the **** iPhone has been working good so far. So i had no phone from yesterday afternoon until this morning but i am loving it now that its on. I guess I will enjoying it now just in case it goes back out.

Following up from my first post last night, I continue to see the issue. After doing a restore and setup as a new phone, the odd behavior where apps would open without even touching the screen - hovering my finger 1/8" above the screen would sometimes open then - seems to have been gone away. However, without fail after about 3-5 minutes of use it locks up. I can get past it for a few minutes by turning the phone on/off but after about the 5th or 6th time it requires a reboot to resolve and thats if I can actually slide the power off slider which often also doesn't respond. I'm waiting on a call back from Apple CS now. At this point, I don't think anything short of replacing the phone with a new one will resolve the issue.

I had exactly the same issues. Out of the box it seemed to work fine. Initial setup went smoothly, but then it started acting funny.


Didn't think anything of it, then the screen went non responsive. Eventually it got to the point where apps were opening by themselves and keystrokes were being typed, almost as if everything was a delayed response from previous non registered touches.


Tried various restore methods (at one point could not power down since I could not slide) and generally slide to unlock doesn't work.


Went to bed, woke up in the morning, and miraculously everything seemed to be working...for a few minutes which isn't any different than what it was doing yesterday.


One thing I did discover is that when you can't slide to unlock, you can still get into your phone sometimes(provided you don't have a lock code) by accessing the camera from the lock screen via flicking up, which takes you to the camera. Press the home button and you are in, and can sort of move around until it becomes non responsive.


This is a hassle, but for the number of apple devices I've owned, this is the only release defect I've come across. Have an appointment with a genius today so hopefully they can solve the issue.

Took mine into the Genius bar today, of course it's only been 1 day since the phone has been out, but the guy was a little suprised to see such a defect.


Anyways, they fiddled with it for 10 minutes, guess they saw all they needed to see and issued me a new phone.


Judging by the sounds of it, taking it in and getting a replacement seems to be the way to go.

can i just make a suggestion to all of you having this problem. Try using your phone in different locations other than areas where you know the issue has occured in the past. The reason I say this is that my old iPhone 4 had a similar issue to this (albeit to a lesser extent) but it would only occur at this one particular place. I would go there about once a month and it would do it there without fail. Really strange because it never happened anywhere else. I now have a 5 and couldnt be more happy, luckily I dont have the same problem.

My iPhone 5 also has screen issues which started within the first 15 minutes of usage. Frozen screen occurs often and also screen will not rotate in apps such as safari and messages etc. I called my carrier (Softbank...I am in Japan) and they suggested things that I had already tried (soft reset, hard reset, restore via itunes). Within 8 days of purchase Softbank will replace the phone so I have put in an order for a replacement. Waiting time is about one week...in the meantime I can keep using my lemon. Lucky me....lol !

My wife is having the same exact issue with her iPhone 5 that we received in the mail yesterday. I also got an iPhone 5 but mine works just fine. Apple phone support had us do a full restore which seemed to have fixed the problem at first but the issue soon returned. We just called Apple support again and they are referring us to our local Apple store to take a look at it. We're going to try and get it replaced but I'm afraid that our local store will be out of stock. Man this stinks to have to go through all this especially because my wife's iPhone 5 was a replacement to an HTC EVO that had different screen problems and was unusable.
