Having the same problem - black 16gb pre-ordered. I've restored the phone. I have a "genuis" bar appointment tomorrow.
Between activation issues with the 4g on verizon and this i'm feeling like holding off on being an early adopter next time.

I figured out the problem on mine. WHEN CHARGING with a NON apple wall plug the screen would become unresponsive or start going crazy when touching it. As soon as I switched to the Apple Wall plug that comes with the phone the problem went away. I tested back and forth a few times and everytime the non apple plug was used it would go crazy or not work again.
Maybe something having to do with the new digital plug?
Luckyly my phone is only acting up when charging and the apple plug seemed to fix the problem.

My problem is similar, but seems to be completely random.
I think mine seems to happen when my phone is cold like a few others here, but I am prety sure it has also happened when it isn't cold.
My screen freezing problems will go away and come back the next morning after charging all night. One time the problem went away after ten minutes, the other time, it wouldn't go away even with a soft reset, then hard reset, then restore.
I want to take mine into an apple store, but it doesn't seem to stay not working. I almost have to wait until it happens, then rush in, because i know they won't do anything at the Apple store if I go in claiming to have these problems when the phone works fine while there.
I was considering taking video of my issue, but that would mean keeping a camera set up at home waiting for it to happen.
I hope I can get this fixed, I hate haviong a phone that sometimes works, sometimes doesn't!

bpmford - they'll swap your phone on your word. They didn't even touch my phone or attempt to duplicate the problem until the new unit was going through a restore. And the only questions they ask are to see if it's an emerging problem.

I hope they don't send me to my Carrier, as I purchased it there and not at the Apple store.
Did you or anyone else here buy their 5 from their service provider and get an exchange done at an Apple store?

I bought mine from ATT and went to Apple for the replacement. They were initially reluctant to give me a replacement due to that reason, but in the end did. They said that it could become an issue if I decide to cancel my contract within the first 30 days as the phone serial numbers will be different, but said that would be the only really issue. The ATT rep at Apple (launch day) said even so, that would unlikely happen (ATT denying my claim if i wanted to cancel in the 30 day trial period). It may take some minor finagling, but in the end it is an Apple product. Hope that helps.

Oh yeah, Apple has also concluded in my case that the issue is definitely the plug. After replacing the original my phone's touch screen is working just fine when connected to the charging cable and plug. I have also tried using an aftermarket plug and when do the problem starts again. looks like you should stick to the original plug that they give you with the iphone 5 and you shouldnt have problems. makes me wonder about its compatability with things such as car usb charger outlets, external aux. batteries, etc....

So, I talked to my Service Provider, and they told me to go to Apple, so I have my appointment booked!
It has started to act funny again, so fingers crossed that it keeps it up (lol), will make it easier to explain to Apple!

I have had a case on mine since the moment I got it on the 21st... I wonder how a case might help the problem!
Seems that some peoplr have had certian things that have fixed their problem, while others can't get it solved no matter what they try.
To me that seems odd. If there was the same exact issue with everyone, and the same solution fixed it, that would makes more sense to me, but everyone seems to have a slightly different problem that happens at different times.
Hmmm... I hope is is a software and not a hardware issue!

Well, I went to see Apple last night, but unlike most of the people here, i did not get a new phone right away. Instead the Apple guy wanted to do a firmware reset and not restore from my back-up, and try that first.
I told him I had basically already tried that, but he insisted. I said it will probably start up again.
Well, can anyone guess what happened this morning? Yup!
I have another appointment today and now get to go in twice!

I find different batches can sometimes have problems. I think the new in-cell technology is just too new to be bug free yet.
Well, I'm not leaveing the store today without a new onw... unless they don't have any (which would be dumb!)
