Q: iPhone 5 not charging

Hi,

My iPhone 5 will not charge has anyone else got this problem?

When I plug the lightning cable in its as if the phone registers this but it will not charge.

I am also unable to transfer any data across to the phone.

The phone has been rebooted several times but still no luck,

Thanks

Jack

Definitely worth checking out, but neither of the iOS devices I've had die like this had anything in the ports :-/

My iPhone 5 doesn't charge. I've tried cleaning out the port and changing cables. That hasn't worked.

We have 23 pages of comments here from people having problems charging their phone. It looks like this problem is widespread. I've never had a problem charging any other mobile phone, including iPhone 3 or 4.

It seems that lightening port was just a bad idea. I will be thinking hard about my next choice of phone because £500 is a lot for a phone that only lasts 18 months.

I believe you're right.  Apple is insisting on sending me a new power cord which I think won't solve the issue.  I've asked them to set up an appointment up for me at the Apple Store.  I've had this issue before in July and I cleaned out the port and it was dusty.  So I tried to do that again and nothing came out of the port this time.  My phone (5s) is not even a year old.

I'm very disappointed at the quality Apple has been releasing here lately.  It seems they're so quick to release something new and not focus on quality at all.  It's like they assume everyone will upgrade if they release something new.  That's not the case for me.  I had an iPhone 4 and the only reason I upgraded to a 5s is because it stopped syncing.  I've had issues with this phone six month after purchase.  Should they give me a new phone on Sunday and it breaks again, I think I'm going to switch from Apple products.

They've fallen far.  This is something that needs to be addressed.  I hope the iPhone 6 or whatever they release next has the quality of the iPhone 4/4s and not the rush/sales boost of the iPhone 5/5s/5c.

To Apple's credit they got me a new 5s quickly, but I sold it as I have zero doubt the same thing would happen again.  I've had four lightning connector devices die on me in similar fashion now.  My 5s lasted the longest (10 months), but that's only because I babied it and didn't even use it most of the time when I'd normally have a phone/iPod with me.

On top of that they've been trashing iTunes' podcast support the past year, and the latest update crashes constantly.  I'm still using iPods classics because they work great for podcasts, but I'm done with the iPhone until they switch to USB.  I don't object to having to buy proprietary cables, but I do object to having the things fail 100% of the time.

After reading these posts, trying different cables, and making an effort to clean out the charging port, I scheduled an appointment at the Apple store expecting to have to get a new phone. To my relief, they were able to retrieve lint (more than I would expect) out of the phone. They have the equivalent of dental tools to do this so as to not damage the internal pins (and canned air). I highly recommend stopping by your local store and trying this if you are tired of having to wiggle/prop your phone up to get it to charge.

I have an iphone 5c, three months ago it started telling me No Sim card. and the battery life was less than new. it is all most 1 year old today. It started charging very erratically, and as of Sat night it will not charge at all now. I have a dead phone. I got on here and found out that i may need to clean the charging area out, so i did it had lint in it. blew it out with caned air as well, everything looks very clean in the port. Well, still not charging so i took it to the phone company where i got it and they said APPLE does not cover a phone port because of foreign debris  ***!!!!!!! how are you suppose to keep the port clean to begin with! Im very very disappointed in this policy from apple, i have had a few and this is crap!!

I've never had anything in that port.  That was never my problem.  The port itself just goes bad.  It's very unreliable.

I'm not touching another iPhone until they switch to USB, and bring back good podcast support.  (Not touching an iPad for the same reasons, but also they're pointless to me now that I can get real Windows running in the same form factor at the same or cheaper prices...)

I have to say, this is true. I thought my iPhone 5's charging port was completely clear of debris, but then I decided to take a pin to it after reading this post and it's charging like new!

Well it happen's to be that the cable i was using the whole time was broken i did not notice that the iphone had a break in it and one of the power connectors in there were broken anyways does not matter ... And guess ******* what....I got a faked iphone cable yesterday .... because i needed one in big need because im using the broken one and i keep using my sisters charger (and that works) but when i got the cable at the store it was FAKED it didn't do **** I cut it open and guess what i found in there  Just alluminum without any cables at all i cut a huge peice of the rubber off and not a single  cable anywhere ... ******* ******** \

FIX IS SIMPLE: GET A NEW IPHONE CABLE AND MAKE SURE ITS NOT A FAKE!

Wowzers, more evidence that all cables are NOT made equal!

I had really bad luck with Apple's lightning cables.  Had those fail on me rapidly.  MUCH better luck with Amazon's "Basics" cables, which ironically are half the price.

Ultimately though I've had 4/4 lightning ports go bad.  Not (just) the cables, but the ports themselves.  The longest I ever had one last was my iPhone 5s lasted 10 months, but then probably only because I was babying it, barely using the phone.

I'm done with Apple until they replace Lightning with USB.

My girlfriend's charger will work on my iphone 5, but a brand new, original charger I bought at the apple store will not (I get the "cable not certified..." message). I know it's not a problem with the new cable I bought, because it works on my girlfriend's iphone 5! How can that be?

It can't be lint with mine, even after going to the Apple store. I posted this message in another thread. Has anyone tried this?

I was still having charging issues. Couldn't get it to charge to 100%. Went to the Apple store and no one could help. They just recommended I get a new phone!

The ONLY way I can get my iphone 5 with OS8 to charge to 100%, is to plug it into the computer, while it's on, then turn it off and let it charge. It gets to 100% EVERY time. If I keep it on, it will not charge. It will not charge in any outlet on or off. This is the only way it's worked for me and I've tried three different cables.

Don't know why these phones have this issue. Maybe what I mentioned above will help some people.
