My IPhone 5 has intermittent charging, and is the same when connected to the iMac. I have found that if I reboot the iPhone it starts charging as soon as it starts up again. It would seem it is a software bug not the cable?

My advice to people running out of charge is reboot phone while plugged into socket. Worked for me but not ideal!!

Wow I just did a google search because my 64gig iphone 5 was loosing battery while it should have been charging!

Took the phone back to Best Buy today.  Turns out it was the lightning cable itself.  They hooked me up with another cable, luckly there was still one unsold Sprint phone and they switched the cables.  Apple should do something about these faulty cables, especially since so many people have this problem and they don't have any cords readily available for sale.

When I went to my local apple store, Florida Mall in Orlando, they had enough cords available. I bought 2 yesterday!

Generally, the same issue with not being able to charge from either AC outlet or from my MBA  AND Iphone5 not being discovered by Itunes ( also on Windows 7 machines). But for reasons unknow ( supposedly to apple tech support as well), charging and sync with Itunes has been erratically (on and off with out obvious reasons) possible !

Went to Apple store today( with my case number and an appointment) and was told to swap the iphone5 with a new one but not the usb cable and power dock. Charging, syn and setting up backup went fine but now, again, i am not able to charge the phone and Itunes does not recognize it as a new device.

Would be good to know if this problem fo charging and sync with Itunes has persisted after getting new power cords or a new phone. Thanks !

Took my phone back to Aplle store today. They wanted to swap the phone but I insisted they just gave me a cable!! Eventually got a cable and problem solved! Pugged the phone in many times now and so far no issue at all. Charging all the time.

It would seem the problem is with the cables and not the phones, worked for mr anyway :-)

I have managed to use another cable and the phone now charges with no problems.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this discussion, it really is appreciated, I am finally happy!

Looks like I'm having the same problem as everyone else.  I have a known good powersupply so I think it's my cable.

Same problem with my iPhone 5 charging. It has to be the connection with the pin. When I plugged mine it recognized and disconnected while it was plugged in. I had to push it in with a little pressure to keep it connected and check periodically to make sure it hasn't lost connection and still charging. I scratched the pin with my nail a little and it's been better but you still have to push it in firmly. I figured there may be coating on the connector. What a pain?

I had the same problem, my iphone is not charging and keeps turning on and off. but I plugged the cable to the old charger and it works!! And when i trying to see if the voltage is the same and i realise that it is NOT the same. the output of the old charger is 10V but the new one is only 5V !! i have to ask apple to see if it is ok. but as soon as it is charging at the moment i dont give a fxxk!!

Slightly different problem for me. When I received the iPhone5 64Gb there was about 80% battery charge from memory. Also there was a photo already on it that had 95% test on it (Why?) and possibly a Q-Code image.

I immediately did a restore from an iPhone 4 back up and most seemed to go well. The iphone5 charged up with the USB cable and I successfully transferred about 20GB of music and all seemed good.

I then went to work and had to  charge with the USB cable and then when I was surfing via 3G a windows7 balloon error popped up on the screen and said something along the lines of "the USB port had exceeded its current capacity" and from that point onwards the iPhone would not charge from the USB cable. When I was home I plugged in the power adapter and it still will not charge. Now I'm left with no phone at all as the new nano sim will not fit in my old iphone4. Phone is dead flat and un-chargeable within a day of ownership, that is DayZ for me.

Not happy to say the least! and I have a 4hour 350km return trip to get to an apple shop.

Thanks to apple care. A new cable and all is well.

I was informed that there is a chip in the cable as others have mentioned.

As soon as they plugged the cable into a macbook an error popped onto the screen, and that was without an iPhone connected.

Within an hour of receiving the phone, the cable stopped charging from the computer or the wall.  I tried the cable with both a PC and a MacBook Air and received a "USB over current" warning from both - meaning that the cable was drawing too much power from the USB port.  I took the phone and the cable into the Apple store - they verified the problem, replaced the cable and now all is well.

This is going to be a big problem for Apple. This may even be a bigger problem than the Map problem. The charging cable has a chip inside. This is no longer just a "cable". Failure to charge a phone is unacceptable.

Same problem here.  My white iphone 5 has problem while the cable is connecting to it.  I tried different iphone 5 from my friends and their are different than mine.  What happened to my phone is, "when the cable is connected/pluged in onto the phone, it is NOT tied enought; therefore, the charging or connection to the phone will be on/off".  I have scheduled an appointment with Apple today to see if they can give me a different cable."  My friends' ones are very tied.  No room to move.
