stuck with error 1004

I'm unable to update some of my apps due to a persisting "error 1004 try again later". I tried everything I could think of: reboot, log off and back again into app store, safari reset. To no avail. Has anyone encountered this problem and found a solution?

Safari has nothing to do with access to the App Store.

Temporarily disable anti virus software.

Apps such as Little Snitch, Hands Off, and Net Nanny can prevent access to the App Store.

Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > General

Click the lock icon to make changes. You may be prompted for your admin password.

Select: Mac App Store and identified developers

Click the lock icon to prevent further changes.

Now try the App Store.

Carolyn, it didn't work for me.

So I did a disk permissions check: had loads of errors following my upgrade to Mountain Lion. Now fixed, but didn't help with my problem.

Finally, I have found the solution, and it was an easy one: the apps that gave the error were on "resume". For some reason my first update attempt was interrupted, hence the resume status. By clicking this resume button while holding the option key I was able to cancel the download. And then start the download all over again, successfully this time. Go figure...

I would also like to thank Nola-10 too. I've had the same issue with one resumed download from the Mac App Store and it's been stuck that way for the last few months. Kept getting the same 1004 error message. I've tried several solutions I've seen posted in the forums, but none solved it until now. Holding down the Option key to cancel the download fixed my issue too, as I also had the original update interrupted. Thanks Nola-10!

Thanks Nola-10!! It worked for me too.

Four years later the App Store download page STILL has the same problem. Why can't Apple fix problems like these!? So many thousands of people run into this frustration and waste a lot of time trying to figure out what the problem is. If Apple can't be bothered to take the time to make a software repair, they could at least put a line of warning text on the download page, and include that simple "option key" solution.
