Crashing After Importing of ~11 minutes

Have you checked the limit scene length in the preferences? It's located in the Import section. It sounds like this is set to split the clips after 10 minutes of footage is imported.

If you don't want clips to be split then you need to ensure this is off.

HDcontent gets converted automatically by iM into another comressor, Apple Intermediate Codec.

that is a process of high computation....

a) maybe, just the displaying can not follow the import any more, so it is switched off...
b) maybe, your MacBook is not able to handle HDimports of more then 10min in s single block..

due to that "non distructive" feature of iMovie, I wouldn't import whole tapes, but just the parts I need for editing; and I would allow iM to do shorter clips (if a scene gets segemented into two parts - don't worry, you don't see the cut... we had that same procedure with iM1,2,3,4....)

besides: miniDV needs ~13GB per hour, HD much more... PLUS you should leave "some" (10 -15GB) disk space free, to make System and apps work smooth...
