Problem with waking from sleep with 10.8.2

My Mac Pro (early 2009 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) won't wake from deep sleep after installing OS X 10.8.2 . I have the default setting set for sleep. The only way to "wake" the machine is to hold the power button down to shut down and then restart. I've reset NVRAM (pram) and tried removing power cable. Nothing helps.

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

I have been battling something similar for quite a while. I have a Macbook Pro with identifier 5,3 (I think that's 2009). Short periods of sleep wake up fine; however it refuses to wake whenever I come back after a night a way from the office. Here's the key info:

Macbook Pro (5,3)

Mountain Lion 10.8.2

External monitor with powered USB hub.

USB keyboard plugged into hub and bluetooth trackpad.

and the kicker:

The issue doesn't happen as long as all apps appearing to use webkit are quit prior to sleep. This list includes Chrome, Safari, Spotify, and iTunes.

I hope this last bit helps others narrow down a solution.

A while back someone mentioned that they deleted some files and it fixed their wake problem. The files were:

com.apple.finder.plist

com.apple.finder.plist.lockfile

What does this do?

I've deleted them back then because they said that the file kept replinishing itself, but mine has never come back, and it's still missing. Is that going to give me any issues?

I have also noticed some funny things going on every now and then, like discs not reading and even a Kernel popped up and made me do a hard shutdown. I've also noticed that iMovie will slow to a crawl sometimes, as well as other programs sometimes.. Not sure what's going on.

But on a good note, since I've changed my energy settings again it stopped my waking issue for now. Who knows when that will start up again though. But I'm not running 10.8.2 like most of you on this thread. I'm still running 10.7.5.

that's exciting re. 10.8.3! unfortunately i can't be a guinea pig for the moment as over the last week i've managed to fix (i say fix but really it's a workaround) my sleeping issues on 10.8.2.

as far as i can tell the fix will only work for dual-graphics card macbooks (NVIDIA geforce 9400M / geforce 9600M GT on 2009 macbook, for example) that allow the user to switch between the two in energy saver preferences. i've simply moved my graphics performance from 'higher performance' to 'better battery life' and i haven't had a sleep related issue in almost a week. i'm almost certain this has solved the issue.

it is a workaround and not a proper fix as i would prefer to be using the full graphics capabilities of my computer..

i'm waiting with bated breath to hear 10.8.3 experiences..

That's basically what I did too. I have the same model and graphics cards as you do. Mine has been working correctly now for about 2-3 weeks now since I've changed those settings, but this issue seems to come back when it feels like without warning. So I'll post it again when the issue comes up in the future.

Hi T3GT,

The plist files only come back if you restart your computer.

However, the problems you have sounds like a defect motherboard or damaged OS-X or damaged user library.

Restart your computer, check your harddisk with disc utility (and repair if neccasary), repair disc permissions.

Back-up all your personal data. Test if the problems are solved.

If not, make another user (with admin permissions). Test in this user if iMovie works good

and check if the kernel panics are over.

If not,

re-install OS-X

or

try to boot from another bootable clone.

Check if the problems are over.

If not, consult a apple repair centre and let them test your hardware and repair it.

Best regards,

Danny

Hi Wonka,

The sleep problem in OS-X 10.8.2 also appears with imac's and mac pro's running NO programm's at all

when they get into sleep.

Nevertheless, these computers won't wake up, or wake up with a distorted screen.

The sleep problem in this discussion unfortunately seems to have no relation with the Webkit engine.

By the way:

10.7.5, 10.6.8 and 10.8.1 seem to have no sleep/ graphic issues like mentioned in this discussion.

However, there were other serious graphic issues with professional audio app's,

like Cubase and Logic in 10.7 and 10.8

These problems are meanwhile solved with Apple updates.

Apple changed a lot of graphic related cases in 10.7 and 10.8

And one of these changes in 10.8 is causing sleep mode problems.

I am shure they will solve it.

Try my temporary workaround solution as mentioned before untill the eatable brand

comes with a working update.

Best regards,

Danny

Pharmacoapple,

Changing sleep preferences to never solves temporary the sleeping problem on

almost every mac w've tested. Did you restart your mac after doing this?

My solution is a TEMPORARY workaround untill Apple comes with a working update.

If you shut down your computer every night,

changing the sleep modus in 'never' won't damage your mac.

If you wan't your mac to be on all day (it damages your electricity bill),

- for instance if you use your mac as a (mail)server or when it is rendering 3D etc. in the night -

downgrade to 10.7.5 since this OS has NO sleep related issues.

I'm happy to say that yesterday's 10.8.3 update solved all my problems: Mac Pro not waking properly up from sleep (I had to reboot every time) and second display not detected (connected via a standard Apple Mini-DisplayPort to VGA adapter). 🙂 Entering sleep mode also succeeds almost instantly now. Both problems seemed related to bad graphics drivers.

My config:

Mac Pro 5.1 (mid-2010)

24 GB RAM (from OWC)

Startup disk: 240 GB SSD (Intel 520 series, trim support was disabled by the update)

Graphics card: ATI Radeon HD 5770
