Problem with waking from sleep with 10.8.2

My Mac Pro (early 2009 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) won't wake from deep sleep after installing OS X 10.8.2 . I have the default setting set for sleep. The only way to "wake" the machine is to hold the power button down to shut down and then restart. I've reset NVRAM (pram) and tried removing power cable. Nothing helps.

I don't know if anyone who has a Mac Pro has posted in this thread (the standalone desktop machine, not the laptop). I do have one, and my symptoms began long ago with the original ATI 5870 graphics card, which has since been replaced since the fan on it died. I now have the Mac edition ATI Radeon 7950, which has more or less worked flawlessly since install back in April. Until now.

My symptoms are very similar to others - usually happens during wake from sleep, machine clicks and comes alive, and sometimes the displays turn on (2 x Dell 2407WFP monitors) but remain black, and sometimes they just stay in power saver mode. Also, this will more often than not also happen when power cycling my machine immediately after this happens during wake from sleep.

I do however have happy news (at least for MP users) - there is a workaround that does not involve a power cycle! Simply unplug the display adapter plug and replug it in to the back of the machine. This has caused OS X to re-detect the displays and either I see the login prompt (I have my screensaver set to require login), or a mouse. If I see just the mouse, I just type my password and then the display comes back to life as if nothing ever happened.

This to me indicates that there is some fault in the monitor detection logic inside OS X. Somehow it is failing on waking from sleep, and then that state does not resolve itself when power cycling the machine, but unplugging / replugging in the display cable seems to reset things. Also doesn't hurt to power cycle the monitors too.

At any rate, this all started happening about 2 weeks ago, had zero issues up til then with the 7950 card.

I'll have to challenge you on that since in both cases i've had the sleep-wake issue return. In the first case of installing a new SSD hd the problem has not recurred for about 4 weeks. After reformatting twice thereafter, the problem has retunred spontaneously.

Going to wait for Mavericks and see if that provides a potential fix. Although my hope is slim.

I have a six month old iMac 27 late 2012 that arrived with Mt Lion installed, so never upgraded. I generally leave it running continuously. It has been shut down about four times since I bought it.

Two weeks ago it started this Mountain Lion Sleeps Tonight and Doesn't Wake Up jag and it has been doing it relialbly ever since. Every day, pull the plug, wait, start.

I will try the magic formula at the top of the post and report back.

Been following these discussions for a few months. I've got a similar problem--MacBook Pro (fall 2012) won't wake from deep sleep unless I plug in to power source. Then battery has an x through it for a couple of minutes, then changes to actual battery %.

Here's what I've tried so far.

Reset SMC

Reset PRAM

Repair permissions

Boot in Safe Mode

Deleted Power Management plist file

Changed screensaver (worked for someone in the discussions forum)

Adjusted Startup/Wake time in Energy Saver (also worked for someone)

Update firmware with 1.8 (suggested for my machine)

Downloaded Smart Sleep--set it to Sleep only, thought it was working for a few days, but machine would not wake up again yesterday and today

Just read about locking the Energy Saver today so will try that.

Mine seems to be connected to the power cord for some reason. I always have to plug it in to wake it up from deep sleep. Then it wakes up ok. The problem isn't awful since I rarely take it with me, but it just shouldn't be happening.

Next step--appointment at the genius bar. (When I called in to tech support a couple of months ago, the tech couldn't really understand my problem, although he did suggest booting in safe mode. He sent me an email saying he had solved it, but his answer was that it was normal for a laptop to go into deep sleep after about 4 hours. Nothing about how to wake it up from deep sleep when it was unresponsive.)

I had the problem about 1 year go but for some reason the refusal to awake turned into a random reboot.

Nothing suggested ever resolved that issue and I learned to live with it.

I installed Mavericks on release and the problem of failing to awake from sleep has returned.

I have to power off, wait a minute and then power on. This usually results in teh Mac strting up with black screen. I then listen for it going through the start routine. When I think it has finished, I then Power off, wait a minute and then power on. The Mac starts up complete with screen. I do, however have to report that there was a forced shutdown.

I am on a 27" IMac.

The issue is still present in 10.9. I "resolved" it again by tinkering with the pmset options, disallowing the Mac to to into hibernate. For me it seems to be no hibernate, no crashing on resume.

The guy I was in contact with from apple has been reassigned, looks like we'll have to wait for another generous sign of Apple.

I really wonder if they found anything on the last try to get hold of this problem....
