Been following these discussions for a few months. I've got a similar problem--MacBook Pro (fall 2012) won't wake from deep sleep unless I plug in to power source. Then battery has an x through it for a couple of minutes, then changes to actual battery %.
Here's what I've tried so far.
Reset SMC
Reset PRAM
Repair permissions
Boot in Safe Mode
Deleted Power Management plist file
Changed screensaver (worked for someone in the discussions forum)
Adjusted Startup/Wake time in Energy Saver (also worked for someone)
Update firmware with 1.8 (suggested for my machine)
Downloaded Smart Sleep--set it to Sleep only, thought it was working for a few days, but machine would not wake up again yesterday and today
Just read about locking the Energy Saver today so will try that.
Mine seems to be connected to the power cord for some reason. I always have to plug it in to wake it up from deep sleep. Then it wakes up ok. The problem isn't awful since I rarely take it with me, but it just shouldn't be happening.
Next step--appointment at the genius bar. (When I called in to tech support a couple of months ago, the tech couldn't really understand my problem, although he did suggest booting in safe mode. He sent me an email saying he had solved it, but his answer was that it was normal for a laptop to go into deep sleep after about 4 hours. Nothing about how to wake it up from deep sleep when it was unresponsive.)
