Q: Problem with waking from sleep with 10.8.2

My Mac Pro (early 2009 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) won't wake from deep sleep after installing OS X 10.8.2 . I have the default setting set for sleep. The only way to "wake" the machine is to hold the power button down to shut down and then restart. I've reset NVRAM (pram) and tried removing power cable. Nothing helps.

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

I did not have that problem.  However, when looking at the folders within the CACHE folder, just about all of them have a cache.db file.  Maybe try restarting your machine then emptying the trash?

That's about the only thing I can think of.

    Good luck!

Perfect. Worked like a charm. Now if it also solves the sleep problem, I'll be one happy camper. After you did all this, did you do a restart?

I honestly can't remember.  I don't think so, but I just don't know for sure.

OK, the SMC reset did not fix the problem for me.

OK, next up is CalChloe's list.

At first I thought the SMC reset fixed the issue for me, but the problems have returned. I thinks Apple needs to fix this problem, realy soon.

THANK YOU. This seems to be the solution. My computer woke up this morning for the first time since I installed 10.8.2. Let's hope it stays "fixed."

I'm reposting the solution provided by CalChloe

    1.  Boot up holding down the CMD and R keys to get to Disk Utilities.

    2.  Run Repair Permissions. (I had lots of permission fixes needed)

    3.  Run Repair Disk. (My disk had no problems.)

    4. Close out of the Disk Utilities and boot the machine.

    5. Open the Finder.  Hold down the Option key, choose GO from the menu and select LIBRARY.

    6. From the Library drag the CACHE fold and the COOKIES folder to the trash.

    7. Delete the trash. (I missed this step the first time I tried. In order to get my trash completely empty, I had to restart and delete a final cache.db file that wouldn't go away.)

I also reset my SMC just for good measure.

Hmmm... well, based on various pieces of advice, I've:

    1. Repaired permissions

    2. Repaired the disk (there were no problems)

    3. Cleared the Caches directory

    4. Reset the SMC

Unfortunately, this morning, is was suffering from the black death again.  This time it was already powered up when I got to it, but everything else was the same - black screen, not responsive to any inputs, etc.

The only thing I haven't done from what was on the above list was clear the Cookies.. I'll guess I'll do that as well, but I'm skeptical.

Has anyone else been on the phone with Apple?  Are they aware that many people are having this problem, not just one or two?  I'd do it, but my machine is not under warranty (it's a 2008 MBP), and they'll charge me for the priviledge.  Does anyone know if they actually monitor these discussion lists?

As to monitoring these discussion I don't know. They certainly don't seem to chip in and give advice if they do - mind you it probably wouldn't be the engineers (who might actually be able to help) who would be monitoring them. From my interactions with apple on other issues they seem to exist something at arms reach and are pretty busy to say the least.

I am also experiencing issues on a different issue with HDMI output from a new Air and someone asked the same question (about anyone listening) in exasperation there as well....!

I suspect they are aware from other people raising the issue through support and can't respond on an individual basis. There is a bug reporting system. If everyone logs on and reports the issue hopefully it will get recognised - can't hurt surely!

I may try a fresh install when I can find the time - failing that - roll back back to 8.8.1!

I filled out the feedback form. You should all do so too.

I went through CalChloe's list last night but alas today the problem is back.

I've just reset the NVRAM as suggested by Juggler00 in the other thread about this issue. Fingers crossed.

If this doesn't work then it's back to stopping my Mac from going to sleep.

I tried even that but I still have the same problem as you. Did it work for you the last time you have tried the suggestions of the other thread? I have no idea but maybe I should do a clean reinstallation of the whole system? Don't know...

The reset of NVRAM did not fix the issue for me.

I'm loathed the burn and rebuild my system, so I will turn off sleep until Apple fix this stupidness. Come on down 10.8.3!

Oh yes, I will also use the Apple feedback form and let them know how I feel.

I noticed that this thread is now marked as "solved" yet numerous people are still having the same/similar problem.

I started a new thread, in case it's helpful to not have the thread marked that way: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4362712

I had wondered aloud whether Apple monitors these discussion lists.  Well, I just missed a phone call that turned out to be someone from Apple tech support.  The voicemail said they'd try to call me again (I called back, and got the "office is closed" message).

Just thought I'd mention it since it's a promising sign.

Also, for those who might be discouraged from calling Apple (as I was) because they have an out-of-warranty machine, I just noticed that Apple gives 90 day tech support on the OS, and since Mountain Lion came out less than 90 days ago, that means everyone!
