Q: Problem with waking from sleep with 10.8.2

My Mac Pro (early 2009 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) won't wake from deep sleep after installing OS X 10.8.2 . I have the default setting set for sleep. The only way to "wake" the machine is to hold the power button down to shut down and then restart. I've reset NVRAM (pram) and tried removing power cable. Nothing helps.

Mac Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

Turning off 'Wake for network access' seems to have fixed the problem. MacBook Pro seems to be going to sleep normally now. Anyone else having similar success?

I received an email from an Apple Senior Specialist along with his phone number in regard to this issue. He sent me instructions on how to gather the files he needed to investigate this problem, along with a program called Capture Data. I've aleady sent the information, so let's hope they gather enough data from us to get a fix out.

After I had a few of these incidents I stopped allowing my Mac Pro tower to sleep, instead shutting it down each night. Interesting that unchecking "wake for Ethernet network access" solved the problem for another user. I'm pretty certain I had that and "sleep disks when possible" checked by default. I'm going to leave the sleep disk option checked and turn off ethernet access and put it asleep tonight to see what happens in the morning.

Never mind. It worked for two days once I unchecked that option so I thought it had fixed it but got the same issue today. Back to square one.

That is disappointing to hear. My machine woke up this morning after sleeping overnight. However, I had quit every application before putting it to sleep. In the past I would always have my programs running when it went to sleep.

It seems, after having some trouble, my recent status is that this morning my machine woke up without any problems, despite the fact that earlier this weekend one time my battery was empty, and another time my machine didn't wake up as expected. I also sent the issue to Apple, using the feedback form.

Actions I took so far: reset the SMC, and followed the solution from CalChloe.

Did all the recommended steps. If my MP sleeps for more than 1 hour its toast. I know the machine is awake because it performed a TM backup. The power light was not pulsing, on solid. No display wake.

Only solution was to had shutdown and restart. I wish I never installed this.  Stop using us as guinea pigs.

I noticed that the problem only occurs when my system (Mac Mini, late 2009) goes to sleep based on the timer as defined in Energy Settings. When put to sleep manually (keyboard key-combination or finder menu) all is well. When wake-on-lan is enabled, the system will also sleep based on some timer. This will trigger the problem as well. So now I have set: wake-on-lan disabled and Energy Settings set to never sleep. As I result I have to put my system to sleep manually every time. Never happened before 10.8.2 upgrade. Apple please fix.

I think this could be true of my system as well. I have noticed that the sleep issue is fairly random - has made it rather difficult to pin down exactly what is causing it - and lead me to believe it is fixed a few times when in fact it is not. Certainly when left to sleep on its own accord naturally the chances of a failure to wake seem higher.

Draadjesman observes that the problem only occurs when the system goes to sleep based on the timer.

On my MacBook Pro, I've been noticing that I see the problem more often when I put the system to sleep using the Apple->Sleep menu item.

I do notice that the problem happens most often when the computer has been sleeping for several hours.  And, I usually put it to sleep manually when I know I won't be using it for a while. So, maybe the method of sleep is not the issue so much as the duration....?

Thanks for reposting this approach to solving the wake from sleep problem with 10.8.2. In my case, it has now been two full days since it happened and I am keeping my fingers crossed.

On my machine, I think that a new driver  v. 6.3.4-3 (posted last week) for my Wacom Intuos 5 Touch tablet fixed things. The previous driver would simply quit from time to time. The first time my computer started up under an energy saver setting, it went to sleep and then wouldn't wake up. After force restarting, I repaired permissions, and it hasn't happened again. Don't know if it is worth mentioning, but I installed 10.8.2 from a combo updater that I downloaded from the Apple website, not via the update in the App Store.

@jadewocky: Thanks for your observations. The default setting on my MBA is to sleep first and after 4200 seconds go into hibernation. Use the 'pmset -g' command for more info. When hibernate starts, the hibernatefile (/var/vm/sleepimage) is updated. So, if the problem only occurs after a long sleep period, it might be related to the fact that the laptop switched from sleep into hibernation. This switch is triggered by a timer... Does the problem occur when put to sleep manually and wake happens within this 4200 seconds period?

I have a MacBook Pro7,1 after the 10.8.2 update my MacBook Pro does not wake from sleep. The white LED pulses as if it was happily asleep but refuses to wake. I have had times that it seems to wake and displays the login screen. There is no mouse cursor though and I am unable to do anything but force the machine to shut down by holding the power buttom in for more than 5 sec.

PLEASE APPLE use your BILLIONS to fix the update that seems to have caused all these problems.

I've had the same problem with my Mac Pro (early 2009). I tried the other fixes, without luck. My solution for now was to reinstall Mountain Lion (not a clean reinstall, just clicking on the App and letting it install, like I did the first time). Then I updated to 10.8.1, and left it there. Sleeps and wakes fine now.

Did anyone have any success with the 10.8.2 Supplemental Update released today?

    +1

I would like to know this, too.  I wiped my machine and re-installed 10.8.2 only to find it freezing up again (seemed to happen to me after a period of inactivity, as well as after going to sleep).  After a lot of digging I found a copy of 10.8.0 and did another clean install.  I'm sitting at 10.8.1 now and it has not frozen up since (was freezing up about a dozen times a day).

I am very wary of upgrading to 10.8.2, but I am anxious for a fix since I can't re-install Aperture from the App Store until I do...  :-/  Also, the (1) badge on my App Store icon is taunting me.
