Trouble importing gmail contacts on iphone5

I am trying to set up my iPhone5. I followed the instructions to set up my Gmail account as an Exchange account, in order to get the contacts to sync. I have 1800 + contacts but only 50 were transferred onto the phone. Any ideas???
