Scuffs/Scratches On New iPhone 5 Right Out Of The Box

Just opened my iPhone 5 which I ordered from Apple.com. As soon as I opened the box, I noticed nicks and scuffs in the bezel. I realize that at some point this might happen from normal wear and tear, but right out of the box is unaccepted. Is Apple aware of this and if so, what can be done to get this taken care of?

Same here. I am sorely disappointed because I fear quality slipping at my favorite and loved company.....i'll give them a chance to fix this but mine has two areas where you can see the metal and when you pay nearly $500 for something from Apple it should look, feel, and have that high quality thought that went into all their other products. If, over time, it was me who gave the phone wear and tear then I totally understand, but NEW out of the box and within one hour it's scuffed up already? Either they need to address this extremely quickly or figure out how to change something at the factory because i love the 5 for everything but this issue....

If you bought a new phone, it should be new... free of knicks, scuffs and scratches out of the box. Don't settle for anything less! Bring it back to Apple and they need to be held accountable for it! You paid 700$ for that device! The only way Apple will improve production issues is with high returns. The bottom line is at stake and with people returning the devices and swapping them will get Foxconn to improve QC!

Afterall Apple went on to saying that the fit and finish of iPhone 5 is unlike any other phone! Making a bold statement as such and producing subpar products is a joke and embarrasement to Apple!

It's headline news on all blogs and CNN too!

You know I was an early adopter of iPhone 4 and suffered for many years with "antennagate" now I feel I've been double dipped into this apple sauce with "scuffgate".

I personally don't like putting cases on my phones, but I was first forced to put a band around my iPhone 4 to prevent dropped calls, now I need an entire body suite to prevent scratches! You know all them other phones don't require anything. I want my apple products naked already.

Good point ActIII because it may not matter since the swapped one will have the same issues. I just hope this causes enough stir that Apple takes notice and addresses this. I'm sure they are aware and sincerly hope they do something about it because being afraid to use your device for fear it will scracth and scuff at the littlest bump is really not an enjoyable experience - - I only wonder why no one noticed this.

Just got off the phone with Apple. Spoke to a supervisor, and they assured me that my phone would be replaced. She took down my contact information and she's going to submit it to the engineering team to see what is going to be done about this.

She also mentioned that it is a widespread issue, so it looks like Apple is starting to get the point.

The first representative I spoke to told me they'd send out a replacement, and I'd send my phone back in the same box which would be wonderful because this way I won't be without a phone.

That's great that it is being replaced. What would be great to here that it was limited to a certain batch of phones coming off a defective machine on an assembly line. I just hope it isn't a design issue otherwise replacing phones will be expensive for apple. I can't imagine all the testing they have had to have done on the design not to notice the easy scratching. There are reports of the black wearing of from normal use. I haven't seem that yet but then again I have mine in a case to hide the out of box scratch. It will be interesting to see what the official apple response will be next week. I think this is more serious than the map issue, that can be easily fixed with software.

You're right, it would be great to hear that this is only happening with a certain batch, but I think this is why they're submitting every complaint over this issue to the engineering department. They must be trying to find a link between the serial numbers, models, etc and tie it to the scuffs and scratches.

All is well though, hopefully I recieve a scratch-free replacement.

Good luck to you all, and a word of advice: Call Apple, don't go into the store. If you get a replacement it should be sealed in the factory packaging like I will recieve. Apple Stores won't give you that.

After reading about quality issues with the first few batches of iPhone 5, my suggestion to anyone contemplating upgrading to this new phone should probably wait a month or so. By then the supply line most likely will be inspected and the bad apples tossed out of the line. If you already have one that is damaged with scuffs, chips or loose and rattling parts inside would be to take it back or send it back, get your money back and also wait a month or so until the lines disappear and things return to normal.

Hopefully Apple will by then have a handle on the quality issue and you will be able to have an iPhone that you can actually live with and enjoy without the stress.

(Take it from an old Geezer who has seen this sort of thing many times in the past and lived to tell about it...)

Same problem here. I ordered my iPhone5 from the online store. Went to the AppleStore in Cologne (Germany) but they couldn't help me, because the iPhone was ordered online. Then I called Apple, but they want me to pay 30 bugs for a replacement. They are not shure what to do and call me back on Monday.

The iPhone is really great and I like it a lot, but if you pay that much for a non-contract phone, this issues are unacceptable.
