There appears to be variation in what people are saying, so perhaps that points to no set policy. Apple certainly seem to have no quibble in exchanging or refunding, but also the ability to review each customer on an individual basis.

Apple are finally pulling their finger out regarding the quality of aluminium

But more quality means less handsets shipped, especially to us in UK, London.

Went to Apple store @ The Grove today to pick up my White iPhone5. He activated the iPhone and I was then allowed to open the box, which I did so in front of the store clerk and found a few scratches and more disturbing, a few dings/dents. Asked the clerk if they had another one. As I am not paying $500 for a phone that is less than perfect out of the box. The clerk declared the one I returned as D.O.A. and brought out their last one. He activated it, I opened the box and found scatches, dings/dents. I asked for a refund. Instead of crediting the credit card he gave an Apple gift card instead. By this time it was after their closing time. Before I left though, I asked the clerk if my phone, that I came in with is good to go. He said yes, because I didn't walk out with a new phone, my phone was fine. Went to the restaurant across the courtyard to have dinner and within five minutes, discovered that my phone wasn't working. Borrowed my friend's cell and called my provider and they told me that the clerk killed my sim card. So now, not only do I not have a new iPhone5, I don't have service on my cell phone either. I have to take time out of my day to go back to the store in order to get this resolved. I am livid. I am starting to really detest Apple.

Sorry austiinnn, I only have a first name of Gail. We only traded voice mails and she never left me a contact number of any direct way to contact her. Though we had limited comunication, it worked out in the end as they send me a unit that is acceptible. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. From the news that is coming out, sounds like Apple is addressing the issue with Foxconn, so everyone should be well aware of the issues, and I believe Apple will be more than supportive now. Best of luck to you!

This thread by Matthew Pendergraff is quoted in the Bloomberg link I posted above

If Bloomberg can pay attention surely Apple should too

Hi got phone. A lot better.. Tiny bit of like white bits on bottom near sockets but can't really see it. The girl reckoned that dust spec was actually a dead pixe on last phonel. Any problems she said get in touch. Could try sending an email to apple again buy doubts they would send another and best bet is to apple. So happier I guess. I started polishing the edge at bottom where minor white bits and seem to Be gettin  smaller. Could be glue residue and may come off but like said can hardly see.

I've decided to get my iPhone 5 replaced after opening it and seeing a tiny nick in the top edge of the chamfer. It's quite annoying because the phone is physically flawless apart from that tiny nick just underneath the lock button. I've booked a Genius Bar appointment at the Cambridge store on Saturday, so hopefully I'll update this post with how it went. All my friends think I'm crazy though, and that I should get over it, but I said to them that if they paid £600 for a product that the company claims is made with "the same level of precision as a finely crafted watch" and it comes damaged in the box, then they would expect it to arrive in pristine condition. Aside from that, I've only had one charge cycle but the battery is reading almost four hours of (moderate) usage and I'm already at 19% power.

Get it replaced!  Don't settle for anything less than perfect!  Apple says they got the BEST of the BEST and that is what you are expecting!  They need to take down the over hyped marketing.... until then, I wouldn't settle for anything less than perfect!

So this is the imperfection I have on my phone, just under the lock button... Very small, I know, but it's big enough to be noticeable and I hate knowing it's there.

Ano how ya feel. Had similar problem. On my 3rd iphone5 and still got slight nick at the bottom. They shouldn't be like this out the box. Just be mindful your next could be worse. I hope it isn't tho. Good luck
