Powermac G5, missing processor cover panel.

I few weeks ago I found a Powermac G5, model 11,2. The computer seems to work fine but it is missing the processor cover panel. It might be missing something else from that assembly that sits on top of the processor but I am not sure. My question is: does the cover panel serve any other purpose other than cosmetic? Is it used for cooling, for example? I am a bit afraid of frying the computer if I run it for too long.
