Auto brightness not working on iPhone 5?

On the iPhone 5 - In the settings, when flicking the auto brightness on/off the screen shows no change in brightness - whether in a completely dark room or with the lights on etc. My iPhone 4 has been updated to IOS6 and seems to be working normally (brightness auto adjusts in all situations).

Anyone else have this problem of the auto brightness not working?

iPhone 5, iOS 6

I finally found how it works. Not intuitive at all.

As read from this post https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1475673?answerId=7017872022#7017872022, it works when the phone is waken from sleep.

Put it to sleep.

Go in a very dark area.

Wake up the phone.

The screen dims.

Put it to sleep.

Walk to a bright area.

Wake up the phone.

The screen gets brighter.

I think it's a bit dumb that it checks the brightness only when it's waking up.

I can see where some might see this as an improvement, but I actually don't like this change. On my iPhone 4 (iOS 5), the lock screen was bright enough to walk around in a dark room (such as to bed, after turning out all the lights). The iPhone 5's lock screen isn't bright enough to illuminate the room because of this new "feature". And I'm not going to use a flashlight app because it's too many steps and so bright it would wake my girlfriend.

Tried the suggestions in this thread and auto-bright did not work for me. Last night in bed, I set bright to low, then eventually went to sleep. This morning, brightness remained low and I had to turn it up. Tonight in bed, brightness was still at the daytime setting.

Something tells me those of you with a "solution" are actually seeing an unintended consequence of whatever keeps auto-dim from working for others. Given the unintuitive nature of the "fix," I think we're still looking at a bug here.

This is how I did it

You don't have to sleep/wake it.

Go into settings and set the brightness to the level you desire every time you change rooms/lighting. The next time you return to a similar room/lighting, it will automatically adjust to what you previously set.

So just to clarify

1. I went into a dark room, set the slider where I wanted for that room, in this case low setting.

2. Closed settings turned off phone ( not power off) just click the power button to turn off screen.

3 went into a bright lighted room, turned on phone,( push home button) go to brightness settings and slide the adjustment to a brighter setting for the lighted room.

4 get out of settings.

5 turn off screen and it will remember those settings. Add more for different lighting conditions.

Now when I go back into the dark room the screen is dim. :)
