I'm having a simular problem but my phone will just go to the lowest dim setting then I have to lock and unlock my phone to get it back to normal... What's going on?

I have the same problem with my Iphone 5. Also i have a darker view by facetime. It´s not so good, i need more light with the IPhone 5 as my 4s with IOS 5.1.....the update of IOS 6 is required in the nearest time

Yes, me too. Auto-brightness seems not working in iPhone 5.

Wish Apple will release fixing issue asap.

it works just as fbzik desctibed it. it is not intuitive at all, but from a practical point of view it works better than how the auto brightness prevoiusly worked

    All the suggestions have worked

You really don't know what you're talking about. I set the brightness on my iPhone 5 to about 1/3 (it's a bit dim). I bring it in full lit room. It's been sitting for 2 minutes at the Brightness & Wallpaper settings with absolutely no change in the slider position and the screen brightness.

No, it doesn't work for me, intuitive or not.

I finally found how it works. Not intuitive at all.

As read from this post https://discussions.apple.com/message/7017872#7017872, it works when the phone is waken from sleep.

    Put it to sleep.

Go in a very dark area.

    Wake up the phone.

    The screen dims.

    Put it to sleep.

    Walk to a bright area.

    Wake up the phone.

    The screen gets brighter.

I think it's a bit dumb that it checks the brightness only when it's waking up.

You don't have to sleep/wake it.

Go into settings and set the brightness to the level you desire every time you change rooms/lighting. The next time you return to a similar room/lighting, it will automatically adjust to what you previously set.

I tried going from a dimly lit room to a brightly lit room and it didn't change the brightness. Might be working for you but it's certainly not working for me when I leave the phone on when going from one room to the other.

If its too bright iphone brightness won't dim it will increase.

I can see where some might see this as an improvement, but I actually don't like this change. On my iPhone 4 (iOS 5), the lock screen was bright enough to walk around in a dark room (such as to bed, after turning out all the lights). The iPhone 5's lock screen isn't bright enough to illuminate the room because of this new "feature". And I'm not going to use a flashlight app because it's too many steps and so bright it would wake my girlfriend.

Tried the suggestions in this thread and auto-bright did not work for me. Last night in bed, I set bright to low, then eventually went to sleep. This morning, brightness remained low and I had to turn it up. Tonight in bed, brightness was still at the daytime setting.

Something tells me those of you with a "solution" are actually seeing an unintended consequence of whatever keeps auto-dim from working for others. Given the unintuitive nature of the "fix," I think we're still looking at a bug here.

I have the same exact thing happen to me Xian with my iphone 5. This is almost certainly a bug that Apple needs to add to their list and have a look at.

This works perfect. I hated that it didn't adjust the "way it used to".

I followed these instructions and it works perfect.
