HDMI to dvi

I was wondering if there have been any issues with connecting a HDMI to DVI-D? What I am trying to do is connect the Apple TV to a projector that has no HDMI so that I can do airplay for keynote or mirroring for an iPad 2. The projector is atleaset 16 ft from the ground. Any thoughts? Thanks much appreciated

DVI is not officially supported but in general will often work for video provided HDCP is supported. Ultimately you'd only know when you tried it. Projector would need to support 720p or 1080p in.

Long cable runs might cause issues so avoid if possible. AppleTV is very fussy about HDMI connections.

You will of course have to have a separate solution for audio if that is needed - some adapters I believe offer analogue audio out as well as HDMI to DVI but I've never tried one.

Awesome! Thanks or he input

For now, I think I am just going to us the Apple TV just for keynote presentations.

I have the projector connected to a computer thru input #2 by way of BNC adapters, and the the sound output end from the computer to mixer board to speakers, so for plaing movies, etc I'd be running that from there. But this would give me the opportunity to do keynote etc from the front of my auditorium

I am going to try it out later this coming week

Hey, just wanted to let you know that it worked, got it al tried out this afternoon, and ran into a couple of issues on my end. (Long story short I did not have access to a scissor lift to run the power cable up the pole into the ceiling tile and the I forgot that I needed Velcro to mount the Apple TV to the bottom of the projector to get a clear line of sight to the IR)

Other than that worked somewhat perfectly. Does anyone know why keynote or pics are not displayed in full screen? Is there a settings button somewhere that I am not seeing? I am just getting black bars on the side, even when I do mirroring. I know with 30pin to VGA/rgb I don't get that

Also I was able to get it to play video files that were on the iPad, though there was no sound coming out of the projector

So since I did not get it connected where I need it, I brought it home to play with a little more and get a feel for it

I love that there is a password feature, which will prevent other ppl with iOS devices from popping on when I am teaching

Thanks for all the help and advice

Yeah after posting that I went thru some other posts and noticed you had sad the same thing too. It will be interesting to see what it will look like with an iPhone 5 connected to it. Something that I did not know and thought was neat was the password to get into Apple TV, I like that it will prevent a prankster from hopping on and interrupting presentation.

Last night I brought it home and hooked it to my tv and gave it a try. I might get one for home, if I ever bumb up my Internet to something faster than DSL. It took like 5min just for the 2:16 second Star Trek generations trailer to load, and then that day I got the avengers and it said it would take anywhere from 3hrs to and 1hr for it load.

Oh we'll, but really neat thing

Thanks

I was on 1 Mbps for years, and currently get about 4.5 Mbps.

On 1 Mbps an SD movie rental of 1-1.5Gb would take 8-10 hours to download on an AppleTV1 - I'd plan ahead the night/morning before watching (or days before as it had actual storage and could keep rentals on a hard drive). Trailers used to take a minute or two to buffer.

On 4.5 Mbps rentals start virtually instantly but it takes 20-40 mins for an HD title to buffer. ATV2/3 are worse on slow connections because they have no proper storage so using the AppleTV for something else while you expect a movie to be bufferings actually erases the movie and forces it to start afresh when you go back to it. HD movies are anything from 3-6GB depending on length and 720p or 1080p option.

There is always the option of renting in iTunes - the movie must download fully, but once in itunes the rental will be safe for 30 days until you watch it. (Computers icon>Your iTunes>Rentals row - only when there's a rental in local iTunes).
