My Draft folder keeps filling up with multiple copies of email messages that I have sent

My Draft folder keeps filling up with multiple copies of email messages that I have sent already. At first it would be an occasional thing, like a single message that I was pretty certain I sent, but maybe there was doubt. So I would send it again, and then get a message back from the recipient saying: "Why did you send that twice?"

Lately it has been getting worse and worse. Now it is not uncommon to have 30 or even 50 messages showing in the draft folder that have clearly been sent.

What is going on? It all seems to have started once I installed Lion.

How do I fix it?

MacPro, iMac, MBPro 2.66 Intel Core i7, MackBook 2 G2, various G5's, Mac OS X (10.6.6), 1 TB Time Capsule (early 2009) & Airport Express
