When I use GPS (Endomondo) for one hour the battery consistently drains from 100% to 62%.  In the same time my wife's aged Sony Xperia goes from 100% to about 85%.  I've drained and recharged 3 times but it didn't improve.

I believe you.  The advice from Apple is a list of diagnosing Apple goes through, ie. process of elimination of possible problems.

Today's cell phone batteries (Lithium Polymer) do not have the same characteristics as those found in Motorola's in the 1980s.  Back then we had to fully discharge the battery before recharging it, or else it would "memorize" the recharge point and lower the available battery capacity when recharged (strange science, but that was the science behind that type of battery material back then).  So, having Apple ask iPhone 5 users to discharge to 0% then recharge to 100% twice then asking users if there is an improvement in battery performance will tell me that Foxconn placed non-Lithium Polymer batteries in the iPhone 5 (hardware problem), or there is a floating software program that can change the user battery percentage display (and not that of actual battery capacity).

Mine is a joke, I am taking it back tomorrow. Fully charged over night and in 12 mins this morning it went from 100% to 93% it's now 6.30pm and on 15% I do no more with it than my iPhone 4, brightness is down, Bluetooth etc off. I need blue tooth on all day for my car handsfree but now have to manually turn on and off. I feel conned as the man in the shop said the battery is no different to the 4. Also connecting to wifi is temperamental. more often says, 'unable to connect' everyone in my house can connect and my old iPhone connected fine. Aarrrrgghhhh. Please a software update will sort the battery issue???

I am a Paramedic last night before work I fully charged my iPhone 5. I looked at my phone once in a 2.5hr period. the phone was locked in my pocket and after a 2.5hr period I received a phone call from work and my battery was at 3% the phone call lasted 30 seconds as soon as I hung up the phone turned off.

I made sure no apps were open and location services turned off. My iPhone 5 was hot to touch even though it was probably used for a total of 90 seconds over a 2.5hr period.

A huge disappointent Apple. Fix it soon or im moving to samsung.

iOS 6  BAD IDEA!!!  After iOS6 update my batterie life got cut more than 50%.  Also the wifi speed stinks!  I rented a move on iTunes, after 10 or so min I started to watch the film... I should have checked when it was going to finish downloading.  Cause it will not be done downloading until AFTER the movie expires in 24hrs!  Oh, forgot to mention, my Internet speed is 11mbs.  APPLE PLEASE FIX THIS PROBLEM. YOUR REPUTATION IS GETTING TARNISHED!!!

It is not watsapp, not any other app or games, not the apps running in background. Seems definitely an issue with IOS update.

I am surprized and saddened that apple is not owning it up, coming up with an official statement and an estimated fix date for the issue. We wait…! Meanwhile i get my old blackberry out...!

Let me continue to share my misery on battery drainage, but first a clarification because I have seen in some posts that people confuse "Usage", "Standby" and let's call it "total time".

    As per apple (http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html):

    • Usage: Amount of time iPhone has been awake and in use since the last full charge.  The phone is awake when you’re on a call, using email, listening to music, browsing the web, or sending and receiving text messages, or during certain background tasks such as auto-checking email.
    • Standby: Amount of time iPhone has been powered on since its last full charge, including the time the phone has been asleep. (emphasis added by me).

So, if you have 2h of "Usage" and 3h of "Standby", it DOES NOT mean that your phone has been powered on for 2+3=5h; it means that you unplugged the phone after a full charge 3h ago, and of those 3h, 2h have been of "Usage" and 1h has been the phone doing nothing.

You may want to double-check your figures because your total usage time, with the correct math, may actually go down.

On a typical day (wasted taking screenshots of the phone):

    Usage 21 m -- Battery 94%

    Usage 26 m -- Battery 92%

    Usage 27 m -- Battery 91%

    Usage 28 m -- Battery 90%

    Usage 30 m -- Battery 89%

    Usage 57 m -- Battery 75%

    Usage 1h 2 m -- Battery 70%

    Usage 1h 12 m -- Battery 64%

    Usage 1h 33 m -- Battery 56%

    Usage 2h 10 m -- Battery 40%

30% discharge in basically 60 m = 90% discharge in 180 m (3h).  Hardly something I'd expect from a phone that is meant to be used while out and about, without access to a plug.

Usage is reading NYT app, some text messages, some emails, some google maps, a couple of brief calls; NO viber, no facebook etc.

I am at 6.0.2 and have done all the steps suggested (reboot, recharge, fully discharge and recharge, re-install from iCloud, don't let fully discharge, etc. etc.).  I am convinced it is a combination of hardware and iOS issues.

I finally have gotten mine fixed but I am still not 100% sure what was the root cause.  Apple kept telling me my battery was going bad and i knew that wasn't right so the way i got this working was to remove every notification  from Settings>>Notifications take them all out even the ones you think you can't live without just for a day.

Then remove all of the Location Services from Settings>>Privacy>>Location Services turn them all off for the day at the same time.  Then here was the tricky part for me; under settings>>General>>Cellular you can scroll to the bottom where the option to 'Use Cellular Data for:" again turn them all off for the day.  Oh yeah, lastly, if you are using imatch i would recommend turning that off during this time too, you can add it back in later.

I did this I am thinking to that part of this has to do with what some of the posts mention about the cellular network getting locked up so I would suggest to make sure you are away from your wifi for at least a couple hours during the day.

Once the battery issue stops you can start added things back in.  I have a couple ideas as to which ones are the culperits but it seems to be a strange combination so i have not come across the exact scenario again.

Same thing here with the heating up.  Device was hot to touch all day.  I disabled PUSH for my emails and that seems to have cured the problem for now...84% charge now (2:35 in afternoon) from 100% this morning.

Also keep turning BT and WIFI on/off depending on whether am in car or building.  Pain in the behind!

Something definitely happened in the last 4 days since it didn't behave this way for 1.5 months prior since new.

Same thing with mine. I have LTE off because the signal is garbage and it's annoying to have to wait for it to switch between 4G and LTE. If I'm on 4G using GPS or outside walking the dog, I'll see a 2% drop per minute. It's a joke.

I lost over 40% of my battery charge over lunch, without using the phone. I lost 20% of my charge during the 35 minute drive in this morning, again without using the phone.  It also charges REALLY SLOW when plugged into the computer rather than an electrical socket.

I was pretty much at the end of my rope with this battery issue until I noticed the little arrow icon frequently appearing at the very top of the screen, as if the phone was constantly trying to search for my current location. So I went to Settings > Privacy > Location Services and swiched it to OFF. Now the battery life is awesome. Try it right now and let me now what you think.

Doesn't make much difference. Location services are pretty important to most apps' functionality. Having to turn it all off in order to have acceptable battery life defeats the purpose of even having the phone.

I agree. All these things are workarounds. Removing whatsapp, shutting down location services, switching to airplane mode...they all detract from the phone's usefulness. We may as well buy a Motorola Startac.
