it's the Facebook app. I used to get great battery life out of my iPhone5, but recently (the past month or two), with the plethora of facebook app updates, something went wappy and now it's an extreme battery hog.

Try deleting the FB app and see how much better your battery life is again.

Don't automatically blame Apple. Do research first!

    To Save Battery Drain:

1- If your not using wifi TURN IT OFF

3- TURN ON NOTIFICATIONS FOR ONLY THE THINGS YOU NEED, like phone, messages, FB, Instagram etc.

4- PUT AUTOLOCK in 1 minute

5- If you don't use LTE TURN IT OFF or you don't Have LTE At All, TURN IT OFF because it keeps looking For LTE signal.

    6- Put Autobrightness ON

7- Turn OFF location services that you don't use.

I've done all this changes with my IPhone 5 and now the battery life is better.

Respectfully, you're basically saying to turn the iPhone into the Motorola Startac of yore.

  • Kevin Thorne Level 1 Level 1

Naturally, the more you turn off on your phone, the better the battery life, but with iCloud the iPhone battery life was just fine.

Turn off or delete the facebook app until facebook have fixed it. This is what is causing excessive battery drain.

Bluetooth is always on on my iphone, and since I first turned it on, I've been extremely surprised at how little battery it uses.

iCloud uses battery, of course it does, but it's NOT excessive. However, the FB is. This is the culprit.

My iphone 5 started this yesterday.  I thought maybe I had forgotten to charge it the previous night.  Nope. Today, same thing.  Then I looked at my apps and one was constantly trying to update and had never completed.  It was not an app I use a lot, so I deleted it.  That seems to have solved it for now.  If tomorrow isn't better I'll delete facebook.

I do not have, nor have I ever had, the Facebook app on my phone. That is not the culprit...

Here's a fix....iphone 5 os had a bug in the original version software that came with it, and updating would not fix it. What worked for me….

    •Plug iphone into your computer

    •go to itunes

    •select your iphone

    •click on Back up now

•click on Restore Iphone (it will delete all iphone os software and install new full os software which is the latest full version)

•Then click restore from your backup so it transfers over your apps and settings.

Now.....make sure ONLY the apps you want to notify you are turned on, turn off the others so they stop checking and use battery. Go to settings>>Notifications>>go through every app to make sure if you really want that app to keep checking for notifications or not. Turn it to OFF if not (takes up battery)

2nd make sure only the apps that you want navigation to work with are on, turn off the others. Go to settings>>general>>restrictions>>location services>> turn off all apps that you don't need or want to use GPS for your location (takes up battery). Many apps are just being nosy on your where abouts, turn those off. Only keep on the ones that you really need on like Google maps, Find my iphone, find my friends, these apps really are the important ones to help you find your way, someone or something from your location.

Before I fixed my iphone 5 I was only getting 4 hours of usage from a full charge, it was TERRIBLE! Now after I did all the above I get a full day without charging my iphone. So it was definitely a software issue and I am THRILLED with my Iphone 5 now. The battery is actually very good. You just have to restore/reinstall a clean version of the software and turn off the app notifications and GPS that you don't need all the time so they don't run in the background and use your battery .

    Hope this helps

Went to Genius Bar and at first they told me to disable my work exchange email account. Wipe the phone and restore to backup.   Didn't help.   Then online they suggested I wipe the phone and restore as new.  Now battery seems to be working better,  so I will add my apps selectively (most were already carefully set to configurations you mentioned).

Apparently, restoring from backup didn't work because whatever app isn't functioning still wouldn't function on the restore.  I'm hoping  it's just one dysfunctional app continually trying to update. I am an educator, so i have a lot of apps.  Cross my fingers...

I tried a couple of times the suggested process by Tm5 on 6/5/13, however did not work for me.  Eventually I went to Apple store and they swapped the 3 month old iphone 5 without quibble, which was nice.

    Tm5 wrote:

    1. Drain your Iphone 5 fully until it shuts off

    2. fully chard it to 100% - make sure you see the 100% and charging is now stop and idle.

    3. keep charger connected.

    4. perform a hard reset - Sleep button + Home button.

    5. after reset wait until Iphone Loads completely

    6. disconnect the charger.

    The end.

    My symptoms were -

    1) suddenly battery life reduced drastically (lasted about 14 hours in standby with everything switched off except for the network.  Battery life much shorter if phone used.)

    2) running a bit warmer than normal

    3) occasionally "searching" for network.

If you are going to apple store I suggest you do a backup & restore first and DO NOT recover your backup.  In other words leave the phone in a factory default without loading any apps etc.  This may help to show the problem to the Apple Genius more clearly.

I've tried Tm5's solution and I think it made my battery drain problem even worse. I've restored the phone as a new phone to no avail. I just have to have my charger with me wherever I go. I'm not sure what else to do at this point if all the folks at the Apple store will tell me is to restore it again.

  • onlyallmacs Level 1 Level 1

@mollyp1969  if nothing is working then take it back to any Apple store in your area (no matter where you bought it) and they will replace it for you on the spot. I am on day two now at 67%. I have not charged since yesterday Morning. I have been using my apps, mail and browsing the internet, I am getting great battery life now that I restored but that's not to say it will work for everyone, being each person may have a different problem then what I had (software vs hardware battery problems).

Well when everyone was having issues with their new phones last fall mine was flawless.  The battery life was great and normally mine would last about 18 hrs.  That all changed yesterday when my phone showed 21% after 10 hrs of use and then it shut itself down as though the battery had drained.  This morning after 1hr 14min my phone was at 90% and I never even used it at all when normally it will still be at 100%.  My usage showed 1hr 14min in standby and 47 min of usage, I don't get it.  Nothing has changed on my phone and my location services, notification services are all very limited and my mail is not set on push.

Something is working in the background or I simply have a bad battery.

  • mollyp1969 Level 1 Level 1

Dazman, I have been having a very similar experience. When I bought my iPhone 5 last year the battery life was really good, but about a month ago I started having the same problems as you've described. I have changed no settings, I don't use push for email, I've tried restoring as a new phone, and with minimal use in an 8.5 hour workday, my battery percentage is in the single digits by the end of the day. I might head to an Apple store this weekend and see what the "geniuses" there recommend.

  • Dazman63 Level 1 Level 1

mollp1969, I have my wifi off and I clear all apps off by double tapping the Home Button.  I don't get it.  I may try a complete factory reset tonight and try that before adding any apps.  What scares me is that people seem to think the replacement phones are refurbished perform poorly.

  • mynonna Level 1 Level 1

Dazman, Same here exactly! Back up your phone on your computer or iCloud. Wipe as new. The load the apps you want one at a time from your computer. That worked  for me when nothing else did. Genius Bar tested my battery and said it was fine.

3 days now of battery functioning properly.

    Barbara from my iPhone
