    Hawk I have imessage off and I use wifi most of the time at home. Yes, I get better battery life on just wifi. Not stellar but, better. On LTE it was astoundingly bad but, my area only gets 2 bars on LTE and the phone is constantly searching back and forth between 3g and LTE. I turned LTE off too. I don't want to say much about my usage at this point any further as really I've about quit using the phone. I do use it but so little it's not worth saying how much. It's been on stand by for about a day, I sent one text, and got one. It's at 69 percent. So it's draining on  stand by more than I would expect it to. We'll see what this issue is and maybe Apple will find more than one issue with the OS. I HOPE it's the OS and can be fixed with an update.

    Just to chime in that I'm also experiencing this quick drain.  It seems to coincide with when I'm at work where I have a weaker signal or when location services are used.  I have noticed that the top back of the phone gets warm when the drain happens and it happens even when the phone is locked and nothing is "running" in the foreground.  Seems to be a LTE and/or location services issue.  I restored the phone when I got it from a iPhone 4 backup.  iCloud is turned on for only find my phone.  Definitely seems like there's some software issue going on with iOS 6, location services, LTE, or some combination of these.

    Ok so after having a brilliant battery life today, I turned cellular data back on, as I was going out and BOOM, battery drained at 5x the rate. Shocking.


    So the issue, whichever way we look at it, is definitely connected to data. Whether its hardware or software, I am 99.9% sure, that you'll all find turning data off, will preserve your battery.


    Now that's obviously not ideal BUT if preserving your battery is important, it's a temp fix. Especially if you have wifi available.


    Also just to note, my carrier doesnt support LTE and there isn't even an option on my iPhone 5. So I can guarantee this isn't restricted to LTE.

    It's great that everyone has suggestions for how to increase battery life on the iPhone 5. Most if it suggests turning off everything that "might" cause a battery drain. Why do all that? Isn't the reason most, if not all, of us bought the iPhone in the first place was for all the cool apps and gadets? If you turn them off just to get more battery life, why not get the cheapest "do nothing" phone that makes calls and you can text from. The phone has a flaw in many of them, I returned mine because of it, and there are so many out there with this problem. I want my iPhone to work the way it's supposed to, and I want Apple to own up and fix this problem. I'm glad I've gone back to my 4 and will wait a bit longer to see if I really want to try again, or pick a completely different phone.

    Or just turn off mobile (celluar) data while you have Wifi or no need for data.


    That is ALL you have to do. I bet it will fix almost everybodies battery issues.


    Tried it on 2 iPhone 5's that had the issue and both now achieving good battery life. Gonna have a friend test it also.

    Apple did contact me this afternoon after reading my posts here and they are tracking my usage through a download put on my phone over the next twenty four hours. While on the phone with them I answered questions for about fifteen minutes while looking at some functions in my settings. My phone dropped battery about 20 percent just from that and I told the person on the phone how much it dropped.


    The bottom line is that they DO know there is an issue, they ARE trying to ascertain what is going on. I know I"m not the only person on this thread they contacted. My battery life is pretty abysmal though it is a tiny bit better than the day I got the phone....still.


    Either you can return the phone now as some have done with mixed results or wait to see if they come up with a solution to this. If that solution isn't satisfactory then I'll have to return this phone for something that can last while I travel.

    Yes, RM if that's the issue then that's a temporary help. Though I HAVE done that before and it helps a little but, it does not fix the issue as even then the battery life is not even close to the advertised amount and I'm still draining on stand by. PLUS what if you are out and NEED the cellular data not using wifi.


    Apple can come up with a solution that will let you use your functions AND give you great battery life as advertised. If they cannot then they are going to have to release phones that work properly and replace those that are having these issues with ones that have working hardware.

    I'm doing the EXACT SAME THING!!!


    I just got off the phone with an Apple Tech dude (battery dropped somewhere betweeb 13-18% on the 48min call.

    I was sent to a specific marketing/tech person to help me out with the battery issues.

    (I got ****** today, 2.5 hours of use, 5 hours standby and i'm down to 40%).


    I've installed the software on the phone and will be reporting back to the guy tomorrow.


    I'm really just trying to gauge if a solution is coming or if I just need to return the phone and

    sit this out until this gets reolved.


    October 20th is my return deadline to switch back to iP4, after that I'm stuck with the iP5.


    Now if we just get them to fix the podcast app...

    I still notice that when I am connected via wi-fi my battery drain is normal. When I am on cellular, LTE or 3G the drain is silly. Also when I am on wi-fi, my LAN indicator light never stops blinking rapidly, even with nothing running on the phone. It's like it's constantly trying to call home or something. PS, the iCloud restore options did nothing for me. There is absolutely a bug in iOS 6. My old 4S is now being used by my wife and the battery is also draining too quickly. It needs to be fixed, this is too nice a device to run with everything off etc.

    Same here Logan. I cannot, I repeat CANNOT make use of this phone if this is not fixed. It's fine if I'm just home but, some of the places I need to travel to are in places where I NEED a phone that will last for safety issues. I will not add worrying about my battery to the issues I deal with when I go to some of these places. We're talking rural Jamaica here. BAD idea to get stuck anywhere there without a phone that works. Now I COULD just get a digicell every single time I go but why? More money on top of what I paid for my iphone 5 already. I have a good roaming plan for a reason.


    There are problems with some other things besides battery on this phone so really I'd be happy with an announcement of some sort. Such as, what will Apple do if this cannot be fixed? I'd go back to a iphone 4 at this point AS long as it does not have IOS 6 on it. Oy!

    I'm now on my 2nd iPhone 5 because of this issue. Like my first one it worked fine for a few days and I've noticed that my 2nd phone is draining the power. (Not as bad yet as the first one but getting there.)


    I would say that since Apple are installing software on people's phone to monitor the issue, I would guess they don't know what the cause is and hence why we are not getting any updates from them.


    I'm off to the Apple Store tomorrow for the third time (60 mile round trip each time)


    I can't afford to keep making these trips so I am reluctantly going to return it and I regret to say (and i thought i never would) I'll be heading straight to buy a Samsung Galaxy S3.


    Quite simply apple seem to be having a lot of issues at the moment and their 'say nothing' policy when things are going wrong is wearing thin. I'm sure that apple won't give a monkeys about little old me :-(

    CRJ, can't say as I blame you if you need a working phone and that 60 mile r/t is a pita! Mine is 80 one way and that's why I have not been to the Apple store yet. It's just too difficult getting time to go there and I'm pretty sure the Apple store in Ottawa won't be able to resolve it either right now so unless like you I intend to return the phone then I'm stuck with this until there is a fix.

    This battery drain is a PITA! My iPhone 4 was a ton better than this one. If I new that the 5 was going to have this many issues I would of just bought the 4s. I'm really regretting this purchase right now.

    Purchased iPhone 5 (first time user) my battery life is great! When I first activated it was 50% and let run down to about 10. I work 24 hr shift work and I'm on it a lot. After 12 hrs off the charger I'm not even at 50%. I have no complaints about battery life!
