    It happens if use or turn on the mobile data or if the locations services are on or it could be the amount of apps that are running in the background that give out live notifications...

    As I said in a previous post, I'm running with almost all options off, no application sending push notifications and killed all background apps. Still huge battery comsumption.


    I've got a little better duration yesterday leaving Wi-fi and 3G off all the time, leaving only EDGE on, but not using any web app on the phone at all, only making some quick calls…


    This morning I tried turning wi-fi on and read a few blog posts on Safari, battery started to drain immediately, could see it going down from 74%, 73, 72, 71, 70, 69, and so on. Looks like the fix for wi-fi actually screwed things up.


    Already reported it back to Apple, and I think everybody should too, through the official channel, since I don't think they're considering these posts…

    Same issue here. Had my 4 for 3 years, and upgraded to the 5 Christmas day... My 3 year old 4 lasted longer than my brand new 5, and I am running the same apps as before, nothing new.

    The 4S doesn't support LTE, only 4G.


    For example, a SpeedTest run on my iPhone 5 showed these speeds on AT&T:


    4G: 2.47 Mbps down, 1.42 Mbps up

    LTE: 36.81 Mbps down, 15.33 Mbps up

    Same here after the update last week my iPhone 5 is loosing battery life very fast!!!

    Why does Apple keep messing things up???

    Who ever is in charge should get fired as well!

    This is a representative day:


    Usage 7; Standby 15; Battery 99%

    Usage 35; Standby 2h 3m; Battery 94%

    Usage 46; Standby 2h 27m; Battery 90%

    Usage 1h 15m; Standby 3h 30m; Battery 81%

    Usage 2h 15m; Standby 4h 56m; Battery 64%

    Usage 3h 32m; Standby 7h 46m; Battery 43%

    Usage 3h 51m; Standby 8h 23m; Battery 37%

    Usage 4h 12m; Standby 8h 52m; Battery 30%


    Basically, ~240m of usage consume 70% of the battery; in other words, 2.9% every 10 minutes.  This can't be right.


    I concur with above -- my "usage" is checking emails, some texts and taking pictures of the phone to show Apple when I go to complaint.  There must be something that keeps the phone "running" that drains the battery.  Tried all reset / reboot / restart / reformat listed above. 


    I have started posting the usage to  Who knows? Maybe someone will notice.

    I am on my THIRD iPhone 5 for battery issues.


    The battery starts overheating & runs down to 20% in 4 hours. The Apple Senior Advisor tells me to restore it as a new phone and run without any apps (making it virtualy useless).


    After about 24 hours of normal use, it starts to overheat. Then cools, then overheats & runs down to 20% in about 4 hours


    And the Senior Advisor tells me to take it to the Genius Bar for a replacement.


    Again, I'm on my THIRD iPhone and I've got a call in to the same Senior Advisor to tell him I need a FOURTH. Maybe I'll just get a refund & go back to the 4S.


    Appe has a real and unacknowledged problem with the battery.

    Hi stanleyfromFL - how did you get access to the "Senior Advisor"?  And is it needed or can you just go to the Genius bar directly (in your experience)?

    You've got to start by calling Apple Support. Once the rep questions you and realizes you've probably got a defective phone, he'll bump you up to a Senior Advisor who will give you his name & extension for future reference. Then you can stay with the Senior Advisor until your issue is resolved....or not in my case.

    BTW, I'm sure you can go directly to the Genius Bar, but they're sure to make you then go through a "Restore as new phone" operation, and may want you to then see if it works wothout any apps for a period of days.


    When I wnet to the Genius Bar after working with a Senior Advisor, the Genius Bar knew about all the proceedures we'd been through (the restore, trying it for a day etc.) so they just handed me a new phone.

    Has nothing to do with brightness, it had to do with cellular on some phones and wifi on others, apple is Hyde a bunch of cowards who won't admit they have a serious problem and no longer have why desire to make a product they can stand behind and not keep shoving certain issues underneath the rug. I have come to the realization that this phone simply cannot have a decent battery life and I will never buy another pos phone like the one I am on again. Apple you have officially dropped the ball.

    I am totally aware that the iPhone 4S does not support LTE. And in the case of CDMA phones running on Verizon Wireless in the US, it does not support so-called 4G protocols like HSPDA - only CDMA2000 and EV-DO.


    My comment was that the speed of the iPhone 5 (when working in a well-implemented LTE area like mine) does not seem to to be that much faster than the 4S working on 3G when all things are considered.


    Even US LTE is not true 4G when you look at the specs but a stelp towards it. Technically it is 3GPP.


    LTE SHOULD give 1Gbits down and 500 Mbits up speeds. Additonally voice will be a VoIP implementation and device distance from cell towers will not count as one device will relay a distant device to a closer tower.. We are long way from that.


    That said, the iPhone 5 battery life deficiency does not seem to warrant changing from the 4S nor does the inability (on CDMA/mixed systems) of the phone to receive data and phone calls at the same time.


    That was the reason for my suggestion that we put iPhone model in our suggestions. Do Verizon Wireless phones have more battery life problems than GSM only models? Interesting to see and probably useful to Apple to be able to look at it statistically.

    You're experience closely matches what's happening to my iPhone right now. Out of nowhere this problem started yesterday. I've had pretty decent battery life with my iPhone 5 until yesterday.


    It gets warm, very warm for the iPhone, and the battery just disappears! One example, at 3pm the battery was at 100%, then after seeing a 4:10p movie, I get out to go take a **** (around 6:30p) and it's already down to 12%! Note that I was not using it in the movie. Then, two hours later (8:30p) it's DEAD! That's 100% to death in 5.5 hours of practically no use.
