Q: iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

Interesting insight Jameson, your experience would suggest that the background apps were downloading information from Icloud, etc to get upto speed on usage, etc and the settings used much less power after they were fully sync'd if you will with the services servers thus needing less "Airtime" interacting via wireless networks. I note bluetooth is a power buster and turning it on for actual use is advised. I still think there is a power management improvement requirement here if it be in set up and/or longer term use, the battery power management needs to improve for a simple reason. Iphone 5 is an enchanced phone functionally to the Iphone 4 but has the same power spec battery in both. This means head for head, the Iphone 5 will be harder on the battery leading to better power management protocols needed for the Iphone 5.

That's exactly what I'm "guessing", but it's just that....   A guess, based on my observations with both my and my wife's new i5's.   As to BT, I have it on all the time, but only in use while in the car and I don't see any excessive power drain issues from it.

Turning off the Reading List "Use Cellular Data" under the safari settings helped my battery. It still drains quicker than my 4, but it helped. Usage at the moment is: Usage 2 hours, 15 min Standby 12 hours, 52 min at 73%. Very light use. LTE off. Bluetooth off. ATT.

When you say BT Jameson, are you referring to BT 3G in the car? If in good coverage areas, I would be suprised if there was higher then normal power drainage. However, if you saw this in poor coverage areas whilst driving, then that may rule out a power management bug in the 3g signal, but may also be down to the fact that BT as a carrier have good network permissions to allow the Iphone to work properly with 3g.

Sorry, I keep forgetting we are multi-national in here.   BT = Bluetooth which I use for hands-free calls in the car, as well as for connectivity to my radar detector.   I commute about 100mile per day total, with about 50% LTE and 50% 3G coverage.   Here in the Boston area, signal strength is always pretty good.

While in the office, I'm on wifi.   While out and about near the office we have strong LTE.

While at home I'm on wifi.   While out and about at home we have strong 3G or local hotspot wifi when available.

Ok, a little update of my situation.

Took it to Apple Store to get it replaced as handsfull has.  A genius told me to change the exchange email to hotmail(it was an hotmail acct) saying exchange server has been known to cause problems.  Then he tells me to set it up as new phone and do not restore from any backup.  After 3 hours 40 min of light usage, 13 hours of standby, the phone has turned itself off.

I'm seriously thinking about just returning it and using my wife's old iphone 4 until I decide what to get.  I never thought I'd say this couple of weeks ago, but I'm thinking about jumping ship to either windows or android camp. This would've been a blaspheme two weeks ago.  Apple still makes great products, but I don't have much confidence in them in the post-Steve Jobs era.

I'll be losing all my purchased apps, musicmatch songs(i could re-download).

When did you replace it?   Did you read my post on the previous page?

I didn't replace it.  I went to replace it but the genius wanted to try one more thing.

You mean your post about using it while longer?  I've been using it (without any resets) for over a week but the battery didn't improve.  That's why I came to this forum.

    Just for reference:

The iPhone 4S which my wife is now using (after 1 year of my use ), is displaying 32% battery with 5 hours of use and 2 days and 2 hours of standby.  This is with Bluethooth on (obvious no LTE).
