Q: iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

    I did get a new phone.  The first one, they examined and said they believed the battery was bad.  I synced this as a new phone, and installed my music and other stuff as new.

    Still bad.

    Here is what I wrote before:

    Every time I use the phone for anything, I see the battery drop.  Text message?  It drops 1 percent.  Phone call?  One percent.  Siri inquiry?  Bloop...one percent.  I can literally watch as the battery drops before my eyes.

    Streaming video from netflix:  It was a 20 minute episode of "The Office".  Dropped the battery by 11%.  No way you could watch a real movie on this phone.

    I have yet to do ANYTHING on my iPhone 5, where I didn't see the battery drop.  Read an email?  battery drops.

    It is all very frustrating.  I hate this phone and I really want to love it.  I have had nothing but iPhones since they were introduced.  And as I said in another post, I have never owned a Windows computer.  That is how much of an Apple loyalist I am.

    @Handsfull

    And I appreciate you trying it :) but you are saying two different things, your phone is obviously still having problems with battery drain if you are turning on bluetooth and not using it? Am I right? This should not be happening. Also I am saying I am getting close to your numbers from a backup I did from itunes with my latest i5 exchange. So your theory of trying to get a good phone at Apple is false. There are multiple things that are causing this from software to settings to possible apps that havent even been updated to work with ios 6 yet and I really think what it comes down to is we are the beta testers for this new product and hopefully in due time we will see this all fixed in an ios 6 update. You may have gotten a bad battery in your first purchase but your phone is still not working if you are still draining battery by just haveing bluetooth switched on and not using it. Just doesn't make sense.

    Yes, I concur.  I'm going back tomorrow to either ask for a refund outright or get a replacement.

    Good luck with your phone.  But your battery life isn't what my two-year old iPhone 4 is, even.  Perhaps the Push email is the culprit.  Anyhow, I just found about the built in Hotmail account can access other folders just like the exchange acct, which is what I needed.

    Fellas, I'm back.  I had a bad day thinking my phone went awry again, come to find out my wife turned on Bluetooth and I didn't catch it right away. Doh.  I 'think' this explains the quicker battery depletion, although I never use BT so I can't comment on how much drain it adds to the equation.

    Either way, I charged it up to 100% and I'm currently at...3.45 usage, 20.45 standby with 29% battery.  This is with 3 email accounts set to push, no BT, all notifications on.  If your having issues, go get a replacement phone.  Now.

    @yuni

    You can now set up hotmail with push, built right into iOS 6. No more need to use exchange (i wish that was the case for gmail).

    Bring your phone in and demand a new one....don't request/ask.  Trust me when I say that no amount of restoring, even if its a DFU restore, will work/correct the situation.   I've tried it 8 different times with 5 different configurations...AND NOTHING WORKED.  I went So far as to delete my IPSW in iTunes, re-upload iOS 6 from Apple and restored again....no effect.

    The ONLY thing that corrected my situation, was getting a brand new phone from apple and setting it up as a new phone.  Do not use any backup of any sort.  No iCloud backup or iTunes backup....no backup.

    Ramone:

    I concur with most of what your saying but I'm not sure if my phone is performing 'normal' at this point, or subpar. I'm currently at 4.43 usage and 21.35 standby with 8% battery Which I don't think is particularly bad, but not outstanding either..... From what I've seen of others screenshots this is on par....what say you?

    I should clarify from my post above, comparing my numbers to screenshots of people with no proclaimed problems, I think I'm doing okay.....

    Handsful,

    I thought I answered you. NO.  I synced it as a new phone.  Then one by one, i went thru iTunes, and installed my music, apps, email accounts, contacts.

    Did i do something wrong??????????????????????????????????

    @Handsfull

    Yes I agree. What you are seeing with those recent numbers is about what I have been gettin when mostly on cellular. I think the next question needing to be asked with the people in here is what carrier everyone is on? I think you and I are both AT&T and they have several networks their cell towers put off actually 4 if you count Edge. So 3G, 4G HSPA+, and LTE. Are we losing more battery on cellular due to the phone fighting over all these networks? Is it due to AT&T still being new to LTE and betwork is still yet to be up and running in many states? Because to be honest if I was on wifi all day my numbers would be in the 10-12 hour useage range no problem and this is from an itunes backup. I will post my exact steps later but for now people should start listing what carrier they are currently on so we can see if the cellular battery drain is because of one paticular carrier. Would you agree?

    Phil:

    I don't know, I used iCloud to sync my contacts,mail, etc so I can't say for sure if Syncing the phone to iTunes caused the problem.  I have never synced my phone to my computer yet, just to eliminate that possibility.

    If you're still witnessing excessive battery drain, go get another phone, show the genius in person what you're talking about..... It's very difficult to debate hard evidence when it's right in front of his face.

    @Handsfull

    My iPhone 4 (two-years old) still holding 27% battery with 3:37 usage and 3 Days 9 Hours Standby with BT just turned off few hours ago (it was on for 3 days).

    That's the minimum this iPhone 5 with supposed better battery life should be getting.  I've seen some who are getting such battery life in this forum, so the problem we have can/should be fixed.

    Hopefully soon.

    @spyd4r

    I did set up a gmail acct, but from Gmail setting button, not exchange button.  Does this count?

    Phil:

    Did what?  You just Stated that you set up through iTunes. I set up through iCloud, there's a difference.

    Ramone:

    I agree wholeheartedly. I think everyone should start posting what carrier there using before they Begin their post.... It appears to strongly be an Att problem and not a Verizon or Sprint issue.

    Yuni:

    True, my wife's 4s (ios 5, with tmobile) is getting 2 1/2 days of standby and usage, easily.

    I'm on Verizon and having battery issues. 1 percent drain every 2-3 minutes while using cellular data.

    Exactly! I have yet to see or hear of Sprint or Verizon useres chime in here on Battery issues but I hear them braggin how good their phones are runnin. Hmmmm??? Sorry for the UK people that are havin issues I have no clue maybe their carriers are new to the 4G/LTE Network as well?
