Q: iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

An update on my previous message...

I'm inclined to think some of the problem is down to cellular data.

A few nights ago I charged my phone up to 100% then rebooted it and put it in airplane mode before I went to sleep. Eight hours later it was still at 100%. Impressive.

Last night I again charged it up to 100%, rebooted it and turned off cellular data. Eight hours later it was still at 100%! I certainly wasn't expecting that... :-)

As I have wifi at home and work I only had cellular data turned on during my 35 min walk to work.

Now, at 1220, thirteen hours after I unplugged it, it's showing 80%. I've made a couple of brief phone calls, listened to a couple of hours of streaming music and internet radio and updated a few apps, ie. lightish usage I guess.

I've been keeping records for quite a few days before this (I typically leave it plugged in overnight and unplug it at about 0715):

    Date03-Oct04-Oct05-Oct08-Oct09-Oct
    Time23:5823:2823:1822:3820:07
    Usage07:0908:1407:1108:5607:24
    Standby18:3615:5415:5215:1612:43
    Battery18%0%27%22%20%

so 80% after 13 hours standby is pretty good. Oddly the usage screen isn't showing any usage and standby figures today, just dashes instead...

Tonight I will do another test, leaving cellular data on (and wifi on) whilst the phone sits uplugged overnight... Of course, that's if I decide it needs charging overnight :-)

    HTH

    Tim

NB. I have one push Exchange account, two other fetch email accounts, two other fetch iCloud accounts for calendars and contacts. (NB 15min fetch)

So I left cellular data on last night after I unplugged it fully expecting the battery to be down to maybe 90% by 0730, but no, it was on 99% after 50mins usage, 7hrs40mins standby. And now, after 3:47 usage and 14:34 standby it's on 73%, so i guess my battery worries are over :-) Admittedly that's quite light usage but no doubt it'll be 6-7 hours by tonight.

I've only changed two things since my results of 9th Oct above:

    1) I downloaded and am using Battery Boost Magic

    2) last night, rather than have my carrier selection set to automatic, I manually picked it from the list. This might have made a difference because I get quite weak signal at home and it might have been switching between the two networks that I can connect to ("Orange" and "Orange T-Mobile")

So tonight's test will be to put carrier selection back to automatic.

I don't get it, today has been the worst battery usage yet...

i had it plugged in all night, and reboot the device this morning around 8:20am. once it booted i unplugged it.

on 25 minutes of wifi, then 25 minutes of 3G after that.. i am down to 87% usage and all i've done today is.

    read maybe 10 emails

    send 2-3 text messages

    send 3-4 imessage messages.

    THATS IT... ***

I AM SUPER ****** NOW, IT'S ACTUALLY GETTING WORSE!

Is 14 hours of standby with 6 hours of usage with about 10% battery left bad or good?

I'm getting my replacement phone today...Does anybody have any suggestions as far as this : Do I take it out of the box and charge it all the way up and then let it drain all the way, and then charge it all the way up again - and then use as normal

    OR

do I let it die all the way and then charge it up, let it die again, and then charge it all the way up, and then use as normal??

    thanks guys

My thoughts are that if you had 2.5X the usage you are now showing, your remaining % would be around where his is........

So you think the battery will drop 50% in two hours of use.  I don't think so. In fact, I know that isn't the case.....because a few days ago her phone yielded 12 hours of use and still had 8% charge.

handsfull - you are always really helpful to me and i trust your opinions.  when i take my replacement phone out of the box should i let it die all the way first and then charge it all the way up /repeat

or do i charge it all the way and then let it die all the way / repeat

    thank u so much buddy
