Q: iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

    i'm not surprised.

if you scroll back 70-odd pages you'll note myself (and potentially others) stating that wi-fi performance is OK.

as soon as the handset leaves the house (and on cellular -even with LTE turned off) it burns the battery like a meth addict in bryan cranston's house.

PS the issue is not limited to wi-fi/cellular switching back and forth as I have had the former switched off when on the latter and vice versa

PPS lets mass produce a phone but only test it in wi-fi....after all no one will leave the house with it! *eye rolling*

well hang on a minute. this is not why your cellular components are consuming so much energey no, this is just a way to say that we purchased what apple has tested for us under wifi. so basically what i am saying is that there could be no problem with the phone ( except for those that have bad apps draining the battery )

in short, keep your wifi on at home and at work if you can, limit 3g/lte if you are waiting for a call, switch to EDGE if you only want to text for a while, whatsapp imessage ( more than enough ) and enjoy the rest of your battery juice. Apple will eventually increase the battery by tweaking IOS6 but the 3G/LTE technology is based on components that require that amount of energy.

there is no magic bullet, just make sure you disable push and location services for your unwanted services/apps.

But testing was noted as consistent for the last 3 generations of iPhones, so why would performance of the 5 be so much worse?

My battery experience with my black 32GB iPhone 5 on ATT echoes all of the above complaints from the previous 87 pages of this forum.  I can literally watch my battery percentage go down 1-2 % points every 2 minutes of use.  It doesn't matter whether I'm on LTE, 4G, 3G, texting, talking, reading e-mail, playing games, or just listening to music- the battery goes down 1-2% points approx every 2 min.  My work colleagues (around 12 fellow surgeons, nurses, etc.) are ALL experiencing the same thing on various networks with their iPhone 5s. We have all had multiple, previous phones- 3GS, 4, 4S, and we ALL agree that there something wrong with this phone.

BTW, this is my second iPhone 5-  my first one came out of the box with a severely chipped black bezel and mutiple scratches on the aluminum sides.

    Cupertino, we've got a problem!!!

there are 70 pages on iphone 4s battery drain "issue". https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4310494?start=600&tstart=0

consistent ? It could be that IOs6 has made a little worse but i would stop replacing IPhone 5s if not really necessary. some of you migh have had hardware issues which is fine it can happen but i would(not) blame the iphone5 engineering design just yet - it does what they it was tested for and it's not better or worse than iphone 4s ( when compared with the same OS )

You say this could be some of us have gotten bad hardwares- perhaps.  But that's not the whole problem.  I just received a NEW sealed-box iphone 5 from Apple Store and it's not looking good.  We all know that the battery stays @ 100% for awhile... now i'm at 94% after 12 min of usage and 1:30 of standby.  This will likely (accounting for the long 100% status) mean that it will on average 4-5% drop per hour on standby - which was like my old iPhone 5.

I will wait to see further results, but it's not looking good.

It could be related to hardware/iOS6/icloud/LTE/antenna/etc.  who knows at this point.  I hope Apple figures it out soon.

Since we are all left to our own devices here, let's try another experiment.

Let's post a list of the apps we all have on our phones, and let's see which ones we all have in common.  Then, after at least 30 of us have posted, we should uninstall those apps and see what happens to our battery life.

We need to beat Apple to the punch at this, or nothing will get done any time soon.

    • On my iphone 5, I keep everything in Location Services/System Services turned off, except for the compass calibration and cell network search. I also keep Cellular Data, including LTE, turned off when I'm home and using wi-Fi. I fetch mail every hour for each of my 3 email accounts; otherwise, I keep any data-driven apps closed. With these same preference settings (except for LTE), I finally got my iPhone 4 to stay completely stable overnight. Not so with my iPhone 5; it loses 3-5% overnight. The only thing I have left to turn off is Siri. Maybe Siri's the culprit, but I don't think so. I hope there's a fix very soon, but I'm not holding my breath waiting for one!

Is that 3-5% loss overnight, or per hour over night?

Good idea, but my iPhone 4 and 4S has over 100 apps installed and is doing fine.

As for the replaced iPhone 5, it's stock apps only ...except for the apple apps that was offered (ibooks, find iphone, find friend, itunesU and podcasts), but i didn't run any of these yet.

I'd like to add that I too have battery issues, but I've noticed a few things:

    1. Standby usage includes the used usage. So it's not used+standby=total.... In fact it's standby-used=actual.standby.... Does that make sense? So if it says 20 hours standby and 4 hours used, your phone has been used 4 hours and unused for 16 hours, totaling 20 hours.

    2. If I am home or at office all day connected to wifi (but with all settings still turned on), my battery lasts for a minimum 8-9 hours of moderate usage. But if I go outside and use LTE/3G all day, I get around 4-5 hours moderate usage max.

I have setup my iphone as new once bought it on opening day here in Hong Kong, and have done several cycles of full charge and full drain. It has not helped.

I unplugged my phone as I left house an hour ago, and I'm at 80% already just browsing web to research battery issues. Ironic?

U know..... I was super excited about this phone, got it the first day. Gave my wife my 4s, and I am ticked. I want a 4s over this thing! It really *****! I terribly disappointed. I think the design is not that great, the battery stinks, I would rather the old thickness and have the flipping thing last all day! It was thin enough u know? Come on apple, who cares how thin u can make it, just make it work well! Why not try to make a phone function the best vs how thin it can be! In my opinion thin isn't cool anymore! It was with the original moot razr, but not now! I want something functional and cool! This iPhone 5 is just trying to look cool! BUT IT DON'T WORK WELL!!!!!
