Q: iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

    @iphone5rocks

    I'm mostly in 4g area only. Would be using WIFI most of the time but it doesn't stay connected. I'd say I'm usually at 3 bars on average.

    I'm asking this because I thought I was fine just keeping Cellular Data off, but then I realized that I cannot receive SMS messages that are not sent by iMessage. This is kind of a problem as I use the Messages app a lot for work. At the end of the day when I went into town and turned Cellular Data back on, I was bombarded with all of the SMS texts I had missed throughout the day.

    I can send and receive SMS messages with cellular data off. Odd that you can't...

    Are you sure? You can send and receive iMessages through wifi, but according to Apple you need your cellular data turned on in order to send/receive SMS and MMS messages. Most of my friends and family have iPhones and use iMessage anyways, so it isn't a huge problem overall except in regards to work.

    And yesterday I reported an improved battery life for the first two hours, but after that it really took a nosedive. I used my phone at work on a wifi network but cellular data turned on. I got through work with a few hours of usage and ended up around 87% Pretty great. I charged it to full at work though because I knew I'd be going out on the town until late in the night. After work, I switched to LTE (max strength) and I watched my battery plummet before my eyes. A 1% drop every 1-2 minutes. Lightning fast browsing, yes, but unacceptably fast battery drainage. I thought a strong LTE signal was supposed to give better battery life compared to a strong 3G signal, but in my experience last night that was not the case at all.

    Also, I know about the rattle and how it is supposedly normal, but my actual camera lens is loose. If I gently push on it I can feel it wiggling around. That's not normal is it?

    @iphone5rocks

    I work in downtown DC with a very strong LTE signal and my battery life is still terrible. 4:07 useage today and I'm down to 13 percent.

    What a HUGE thread...

    So...I am a fireman and work 24 hour shifts in a large city.  On days I work, like today, my battery lasts ALOT longer...

    Currently usage is 5 hours 15 minutes

    standby 18 hours.

    35% battery remaining

    Ive actively tried to kill the battery for the last couple of hours by running hbogo but I'm about to give up

    When I'm at home in a more rural neighborhood, stats were as follows:

    Usage 4 hours 1 minute

    standby 9 hours 2 minutes

    1% battery remaining

    1 hour spent running using runmeter the rest was surfing/messing around with "words" and other games.

    LTE always "off".  Never use Push.  All notifications except text and phone OFF.  Location services OFF except during run...

    It seems to me the biggest factor is indeed probably cell reception areas, as at home signals are splotchy...at work signals are strong...

    Ask yourself if you spend alot of time in poor signal areas...could this be the culprit????

    something is running... i left my iPhone 5 uncharged to see how it fairs... 9-10 hour standby... 97% when i woke up...

    I wonder if CDMA phones are having issue as CDMA does use more power than GSM...

    Could that be the issue?

    on att, battery will drop to 50% by the end of the day with me using moderately...

    While I find the wifi solution to help a lot, I still am only getting about 4 hours of useage.  Further, I have full LTE signal.

    You should get a Samsung and stick it to Apple!  That way they'll learn the hard way that you're not happy with their products.  Have fun getting your money back from app pirates when you're on Android!

    Yes, 100% positive for SMS. See http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2755 or this table:

    Not doing too badly, although I have just dropped to 8% from 12% trying to post this... Apple really need to fix this - what's the point in an iPhone if I can't use it? I mean it lost 6% overnight in standby doing nothing?

    You have NOTHING to complain about.   You're getting the same usage stats I am and I'm thrilled with my phone.

    Push settings to 1hr

    Screen Brightness to 20%

    Not using WiFi

    Only using 3G

    Noticed that with WiFi on i was getting ridiculous battery life, so i turned it off and got my battery usage. Still not as good as previous iterations in my opinion, especially as they worked out of the box on Apple settings. Still, have a go at the way i did it.. If it doesnt improve your battery life.. It was worth a shot. Also with WiFi on, a lot of data (to the sum of 2gb near as, was sent and received) with it off it currently sits on 37mb, and thats using skype too. No music playing, otherwise i notice every track i lose at minimum 1%.

    FYI - The other day i got 5hrs before my phone ran out of battery on me. I sent approximate 100 texts, and made two phone calls lasting half hour or so. So, yes i do have something to complain about. Also, the 8hr usage isnt accurate. I physically used the phone for maybe 3-4hrs.. The rest it was in standby. Overnight it's ramped it up to 8hrs.. So unless i do sleep messaging....

    Not so fast. We have no idea how he was using his phone during those 8 hours. If all I did was listen to music in iTunes I could easily get 8 hours. It's doing anything over LTE/3G that kills the battery at a pathetic rate.

    @Jameson,

    How are you using your phone during your 8 hours? Are you using wifi, 3g or LTE? How is your signal strength. What could account for the improved numbers you are getting relative to others here?
