Q: iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

Many others have posted similar suggestion already in this thread.   However, the general consensus is that a super high tech, EXPENSIVE, smartphone should not need continuous intervention, just to achieve acceptable battery life.   While I have been very lucky with my own i5, too many others are struggling terribly!

If I had to spend my day turning stuff on and off, I'd be leading the charge for an APPLE admission of a problem.

I agree that there is an issue and not what we expect from Apple. people are suffering from this, hence my rather lengthy post to show how I've fixed my numerous issues! The post should help people resolve their (or at least track down the issue) issues before a fix from apple comes along.

If you had bothered to read the post you basically end up turning LTE on and off, hardly constant and daily intervention......

    Player8, with all due respect,

Apple did not say I would have 8 hours of usage, unless I used the features I wanted in this phone.  I bought an LTE phone.  I don't want to turn it off.  If I wanted a 3G phone I would have kept my iPhone 4.  I use Bluetooth.  Every day.  I don't want to turn it off.  I used THAT on my iPhone 4 no problem.  I don't want to turn down my screen brightness. Apple sold me on how beautiful it is.

This is like buying a Maserati and keeping it in your garage.

I could not agree more. I didn't spend this much money on a state-of-the-art smartphone to turn everything off. What's odd is ... I've had my iPhone 5 since the day it was released. The first two days of battery life were odd and I wrote them off to the OS doing it's "battery life detection" thing. Sure enough ... from day 3 on ... everything was GREAT!!! Then ... about three days ago, I noticed the BIG DRAIN.

My phone would go from 100% to DEAD in 4.5-5 hours.

That's with No phone calls and all I did was check my email a couple of times.

    No apps, nothing.

I looked at my phone that had been in my jacket pocket after shopping at the mall all day and it was "dead".

Seems that some app or OS update did something. Dare I say a virus?
I find it odd that a battery would just up and fry or hardware would systematically freak out.

With SO many users having this issue ... it seems as if some common app could be a culprit?

With that thought .. I started deleting apps that I used often that had recently been updated
    (FourSquare, FB, LinkedIn, etc ....)

    Nothing changed.
I spent half of my day today carrying around a dead phone again.

I really don't want the competitor's phone ... and I certainly don't want to eat crow after bragging so much about how "awesome" my new iPhone 5 was. I'd like Apple to address this and let us know they are looking into it.

Or ... stop the TV spots.

When I was in the store trading in and getting my THIRD iPhone 5 (because the performance of the first two was so horrible), , the guy claimed he had heard nothing about battery issues.

    I didn't know iPhone 4 had LTE.....

Have you even read my post?...https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4472476?tstart=0

    Phil

The biggest issue isn't LTE, it's the email app issues...... Did I say you have to turn it off, what was said is to maximise battery life on idle is to turn it off. Do you need 100mbps of "content" streaming capability while it's idle and on standby?

Buying a Maserati and keeping it in the garage? Isn't it more like buying a Maserati and driving everywhere at full speed but then being surprised that you have poor fuel economy?

    Marc

When does tweaking some of the settings amount to switching everything off, I don't see your logic? The competitors phone isn't any better, I've just tried that....

Seems like people need to get some perspective here, as a fellow user who until recently had the battery issues (and also spent some of very hard earned money on this machine) the post I put up is just a guide on how to extend your battery life until apple gets around to fixing the issue. It's something that works, is here now and still allows good functionality with excellent battery life.

If you don't like it then you know where you can put your opinions :), this is basically a free guide so please keep your toys in the pram.

If you want to vent, please go to your nearest apple store..

Some people are having issues, some people arent.  I get a good decent battery life on my iPhone 5.  A day of moderate use with everything on(LTE, bluetooth etc) it drops down to 60%.  Lots of txting and shopkick.

I have tested a lot of people who says things here and there...

Left my iPhone at 100% when i head to bed, 100%--> 98% with 9 hour standby time...

my email updates every 15 mins...

so i dunno why ppl are having issues.    guess im just lucky?

I was getting around 4 hours battery life for the first two days of having the iPhone 5 yesterday I reset the settings on my phone and then drained the battery followed by a full charge. I noticed a MASSIVE difference which the image below demonstrates in the performance of the battery on my phone. More so though today it looks to be even better than that I have used it solid for a hour and I am on 95% whereas when I first got it that took me to 75%. Hope this helps although it probably has already been posted!

You missed my point.  An iPhone 4 doesn't have LTE.  I said if I wanted a 3Gphone I would have kept my iPhone 4.  And I'm sorry, but you are proposing a clunky solution.  Why would I want to turn off LTE, and dive 3-deep in menus whenever I want to do something other than make a phone call?

Steve Jobs would have been laughed off the stage if he would have introduced the first iPhone with EDGE that had to be turned on and off.

    He didn't do that....did he?

Btw, I know you are happy with your solution.  But this thread is up to 130 pages now with people who think there must be something better.

Wow thanks for clearing up the obvious that that the iPhone 4 didn't have LTE....

Again you haven't really read the post, or haven't really bothered too or you won't be so fixated on the LTE "off" switch.

The guide is far more, what its giving you is a summary of solutions and a way to find out what is specifically affecting your phone and give you a way to temporary resolution.

Anyhow, I'll let you continue whinging and moaning until you have that perfect firmware update from Apple and in the mean time having to carry a charging cable around.

While for others I hope the guide will help you have close to normal battery life..

Wonderful - A huge storm coming to NYC... Huge possibility of a wide spread power outage...andddd my 1 and only phone dies within hours.  I am NOT ****** off that it was released with these issues. I'm ****** off because it's more than a month later. No one will acknowledge it and there is not fix...even 6.0.1 doesnt even guarantee us a fix.  I mean SERIOUSLY.  I need my phone for work and for my social life... but now i'm in a situation where having a PROPERLY WORKING phone is necessary and I am completely left without that.  This company is seriously RIDICULOUS!

If all of your fixes, tricks, and tips have worked for you - Thats awesome!!! I'm really happy that you have fixed your problem.  I have done everything that I could possibly do to make this phone work the way it was supposed to work.  I've let it "Settle" without turning this off and that off... Nothing changes...THEY NEED TO FIX IT! It's getting to the point where it's OUTRAGEOUS to me that they have not and they won't even tell us that a fix is on the way.  THAT is the part that probably annoys me the most.

Definitetly my last apple product.  I can overlook a mistake and bad software - but I can not overlook keeping people in the dark who rely on their phones for almost everything that they do in their life.  Absolutely disgusting service.
