Q: iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

justabout, you not the only one. I am having exact issue you are having. Difference is that i do not have anything enabled, no icloud, no email, no location, no nothing. It still drains the battery on 4g and LTE at 1% every 2 minutes. This is after ios upgrade to 6.0.1

Is all software for me at this point. On ios 6 i do not remember exaclty the 4g and LTE life was much better, it was not this bad.

Funny thing is that I got BURNED at least 3 TIMES with ios upgrades. The first time was 3.x then 4.x

After upgrades all kind of issues experienced with 3.x and 4.x versions

I broke my own rule to never upgrade to the newest ios, leave it as it is if it works

When I had the iphone 4 I had 4.3.5 on it and never upgraded. I was getting a FULL 3 days usage out of it. I never upgraded so it was great. I can compared the 4G/LTE with EDGE. I remember having EDGE on my 3.x  iphone at times and it was useless for doing anything. Now with LTE is the same thing is useless meaning it does now last, what a few hours if that ?

I regret selling my iphone 4 with ios 4.3.5 maybe one of the biggest mistake of 2012 that I made. The 3g was resonabley fast.

Out of curiosity I looked at the BB 9860. I see that this is a 4G model. It looks like it has the same battery drain issue. So i guess Apple is not so great after all and 4G is killing a lot of phones on different platforms. The thing is that people expect excellence from Apple and this time they lied. Tim Cook needs to stand up as a man (cause he does not qualify as the CEO) and say hey, we lied as there is no way you are going to get:

Internet use: Up to 8 hours on 3G, up to 8 hours on LTE, up to 10 hours on Wi-Fi

8 hours on LTE, no Tim as a CEO, you did NOT execute. CEO like sure things they use words such: "absolutely, we are 100% confident."  The only thing 100% is that battery life on LTE on iphone5 on LTE usage is draining the battery at 1% rate every 2 minute to 3 minutes at best.

Tim Cook needs to take my iphone5 as his ONLY BONUS at the end of 2012. The millions of stock that he will likely get at end of 2012 are on my pain and utter disgust of the iphone5 battery life on LTE.

Why can I say this, because I am one of the millions of customers that Apple lied to with straight face. I have the right to say it. With the new iphone5 Apple is a deceiving and lying company.

marine8: What's your battery drain like with all those services turned on? I experimented with shutting things down like location services and saw no change in my drain rate.

Those of us with problems: what carrier are you on? I'm on AT&T, which traditionally has a weaker signal than Verizon. Simple physics says battery life will significantly diminish when the phone encounters a poor signal.

Right now I'm at 1hr 28mins and 83%. Thats a drop of 15% since I hit up the office wi-fi at 9:30. Since then, I've used it primarily for a few messages, some email and no browsing whatsoever.

-A straight up average of the percent drop per minute yields an estimate of 8.62 hours (assuming most use is wifi)

-But: accounting for that 23min drop to 99%, that yields an adjusted estimate of 6.76 hours, or 6hrs 45mins (7hrs8mins adding that 23mins back in). Again, this is mostly on wifi and with very little actual use.

One other thing: I just switched iCloud to fetch and set it to a 15 minute interval. I also disabled Facebook calendar/contact integration. We'll see if that makes a difference.

Everything is off, i mean everything. Like I said I did a new restore to ios 6.0.1 factory.

I turned off everything that can be turned off. I do not have icloud, no email, no bluetooth, no  location, no push, no nothing, is just like it came from factory. When i turn on LTE (ATT) it will burn the battery at rate of 1% every 2 or 3 minutes at best when browsing. That is my problem which gives 3 to 5 hours max on LTE browsing, half of what is advertised.

I dont care about wifi, i see your point, but if i wanted wifi i would have bought an iphone touch. (wifi battery life is longer)

So now is a iphone touch hybrid, meaning cellular if OFF and only connect to wifi, that is the only way I can make it a day or so, that gives browse internet on wifi only and place calls. The issue that I am having is that i am missing text messages with Cellular OFF, so as you can see above I am not happy at all about this. These settings are not realistic, as it defends the purpose of having an iphone.

When I turn on Cellular/LTE  the above "Tim Cook" syndrome happens.....

I have email/icloud/location services etc all enabled and still get a drain of 2.5mins/percent on LTE. My question is, if you turn those services on, is your drain worse? unchanged?

A great deal of the posts on this forum postulate that turning everything off will fix the problem. My experience says it makes little to no difference. Since you have a problem similar to mine, it's worth enabling those services and monitoring your phone's reaction.

Ill do that when I get home, now I am at 12% battery (too low to try anything) and as the charge cable is $19 I did not buy any. Maybe Tim Cook will send me a couple for Christmas (make that Thanksgiving)

Thinking about this, Apple needs to scrap any work on iphone 5S  if there is one in the works, and come out with a brand new design, model whatever is called, and get the LTE working right. Maybe they need carrier help on this, maybe they don't, but the thing is the way iphone 5 handles the LTE is a failed experiment that Apple should have found in their QA testing. Or they did and just don't care, as investors had to come first, not customers. Either way is wrong.

I don't think any amount of tweaking to hardware (too expensive to change it at this point) or software upgrade to ios 6 will fix any of these issues. Likely in a new product. Which if that is indeed the case is a **** shame. By then Apple would have dissapoint me enough that I would not consider their product.

I would gladly exchange my iphone 5 for a brand new iphone 4 (not 4S) with ios 4.3.5 installed on it

You know the slap in the face is the new "features" in ios 6.1 that i read about of buying movie tickets with it ( i dont care about that) .....if so they do that in ios 6.1 and the battery drain IS STILL NOT FIXED i will throw this piece of **** product in the garbage.

P.S.  Apple wants to get a  foothold in the Entreprise with the iphone 5 to replace Blackberry for email and such, ya right, with the horrible battery life of iphone5, never

It would be nice to hear from Samsung Galaxy S3 owners on how their battery life is on a full day of being on LTE cellular not wifi just to get a comparison with the the competition because if it is in fact better I would't mind jumping the Apple ship and gettin on their boat right now. Anyone got friends or family with the S3 that would like to share their battery life experience?!

Have to disagree there.... Had a 4 since launch day and, battery trouble aside, am entirely satisfied with the iPhone 5. The battery life is a minor/moderate problem... it's forced me to become more concious of how I use my phone, which I don't like, but otherwise its better than the 4 in every respect. I've always known I'm one of the 'power users' who voraciously consume data (much to AT&Ts despair), but I honestly have charged my phone nightly since the original iPhone came out.

I'd like the battery to last 7-8hrs on LTE as promised. And that's the extent of my complaint here. Seeing as many regular users and, almost universally, the testers for newspapers, etc. were able to get that in routine use, I'm not sure there is enough evidence to suggest a fleet-wide design flaw.

Ramone: I queried a few friends... evidently they haven't been logging their battery life with charts and stopwatches like us, haha! But their estimates of regular use were 5-6 hours on LTE (which iphone can theoretically, or pracitcally, depending on who you talk to, outdo). They both are heavy users - one for work, the other just an addict like me.

OMG....I read about 3 pages worth starting from the end and I trully feel sorry for some of you. I for one have been using my Iphone 5 for the last 2 weeks. Everything turned ON, except for emial(set to manual). Sports scores, weather,LTE,facebook, screen brghtness to auto but set to half way point and I have to say the battery life is excellent. I work 12 hours a day from 8am to 8pm. With casual use, including streaming music on pandora nad spotify and the occasional youtube video, i get home with at least 30 percent..I unhook my phone at 7 am and dont conect it back uintill about 10pm that night....Last night I left work and after watching two footbal games on and off on my phone for about 4 hours total, I ended my work day with 20 % battery left. I still ended up going to the gym after work and listening to pandora for another 1.5 hours!!!!!! got home and I was at 9%......Not bad at all. Not once did I hit any wfi connection and I do have the latest IOS 6.0.1. FOr those that want the exact hours of battery life that were advertised, think of this...WHy arent you gripping about not getting the FULL 16 GIGS of storage that are advertized????!!!!!! It is all an estimate..bettery life and memory...Ease up on the insults...Instead of making your life miserable and watching the battery life all day like a hawk( WHICH DRAINS THE BATTERY IN ITSELF) work harder at work if you have a job...if not find one. PLay with your kids if you have some....if not go make some.... My two cents
