Q: iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

I have an iPhone 5 that used to drain a lot of battery. I started with 100% in the morning and by the afternoon was over. Previously i had an iPhone 4 with no problem.

    Fix that worked for me:

In the beginning when i bought the 5 i restored from 4. But after reading some discussions i resetted the iPhone 5 to factory (settings-general-reset-erase all content and settings) and then used iCloud to restore my backup. Since then my battery is finally ok i can easily use the phone all day and by the evening still 30-40% remaining. I'm very happy now

    Nope.. Everything off except 3G/LTE

Basically, I'd done a couple of tests.

Tested with 3G and LTE (all features off)

Testedwithout 3G/LTE network (all features off)

Tested on 2, 10mins interval with 3G/LTE ( all features off)

    Diagnotics and usage funtion (Off)

Conclusion, some data trasimission activities are definitely running on background without us knowing and due to these backgound activities, our phone's battery performance and data usage got affected.

Only thing left is the app sweep.

Not everyone is getting this data issue.

Actually from all the posts there isn't one single issue, the battery drain problem is a number of bugs.

I had a battery draining problem when I first got my phone in launch day. It was only when I asked my cousin about the batt life that he told me he had no problem(same modle iPhones 64g white). I proceeded to book a "genius" appointment to rectify the problem. My "genius" went about to tell me oh as no problem after running diagnostics, but because I had "dropped calls" he would give me a new phone.

I take home my new phone restore from back up and low and behold I have the same issue. I rebook an appointment with another "genius" the following week. My new "genius" runs diagnostic tests and tells me there is nothing wrong with my phone. I laugh mockingly at him and proceed to argue my case for 30 min, to which he responds by pulling out his iPhone 5 to show me his batt draining issue. So this "genius" knows there's an issue and tries to reassure me that apple will fix it and wouldn't forget it's customers. I walk away from the apple store with the presence of mind to sell the phone and buy an S3 and still have about £400 worth of change in my pocket.

I decide that l should give this one last crack so the day after my "genius" appointment I do some research, I continue reading this forum in hope that I can find a fix that works but I find nothing. I then looked at an austrailian blob that said I should reset all settings under the reset option. I do so as well as resetting the network settings. After doing those two things my batt life seemed to improve dramatically. I could get 6-7 hours of use, phone calls, email set to push, and messaging, social obligations. Before the best I could get was 2-3 hours on 7 hours standby. Now I can use it for 24-48 hours depending on usage.

I don't know if this is as good as others but its as good as I was getting on my 4(best **** phone I've ever had).

I have been reading this thread for a while now.. have to share my experience on this too:

Same issues here, but something happened today..

After I received the phone a few days back, I was only able to get around 4hours of usage and 8hours of standby out of it before it reached below 10%.

I always plugged it in to charge it up, mostly to 100%, or a quick juice-boost.

The same thing happened all over, 4-5h usage 8-9h standby, no more. (testing it for like 5days)

Yesterday I decided to let the phone die, but with my phone @1% of battery it lasted around 20-25 minutes before it died, at least 20min usage! no standby.

With my hopes this will compensate on the next complete charge, it seemed it did.

Charged my phone at night for around 5-6 hours straight, unplugged and prepared for work.

    After a while I checked the phone... 99% (25min usage, 1h 50m standby)

The only thing, while at work I had a bad reception, even no service for a few hours (2 or so)

Now at home, I "still" have 39% left as we speak (5h 41m usage, 13h 50m standby)

Not really great, but not bad either.

I hope this "no service" thing this part of the day didn't really do anything to the battery saving...

Though I must say, while using the phone.. I am too scared to watch how much percentage went down (I think more people experience the same feeling haha) but it was reasonable.

Lets see what tomorrow brings, maybe it was my "lucky" day.

Location services are disabled by the way, same as push, mail is received every 30minutes (fetch)

Brightness at around 35%, 3G enabled (dont have LTE here) WiFi on for around 2 hours now (home)

But to be honest, using the phone really lets it go boom on the battery compared to other devices I had before.

A shot of my best battery performance so far. Got this Iphone 5 on release day. The following results r mainly using a 4g connection (average 3 to 5 bars), 1:15 worth of wifi. Used wifi to update Asphalt 7 app and played game for like 45min. Plenty of Facebook, email, text, and a few calls lasting no more than 20min. No LTE in my area. Only did one full charge cycle after updating to IOS 6.0.1 (Drain to phone shuts off).

Wifi seems to get a bit less than the battery usage that 4G/LTE was advertised as. LTE gets 3 hours on my 3rd brand new replacement. 4G gets 4 max. Awesome!

The battery issue for me is absolutely related to 3G connection.

I'm on Vodafone network (Germany), 5 bars signal, 16mbps connection speed, LTE is not available here.

iPhone 5 32gb,  unlocked, set up as new, no iCloud account connected, everything I can think of is turned off; e-mail, caldav and carddav accounts from Google are set to Manual. Every time I check my email or do anything in the internet, I can watch my battery % disappearing  like 1% every minute. Since I go online once every half an hour (for a short time), after approx. 3 hours usage and 7 hours standby the phone is dead. If I switch the cellular data off or just connect to wifi the battery life becomes normal, on par with my 2 years old iPhone 4.

Apps can be another source of drain, I've seen Facebook and Viber named as possible culprits.

I don't suppose while you were updating to iOS6.0.1 the connection was interrupted?

To drain at 1% per min you got to have to be using the antenna at full power.

If Email / iCloud / Location Services are switched off then there really is only apps or currupted OS installation left.
