Q: iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

Charged my phone through wall charger.

Still so far so good. (75% / 4h18m usage 6h26m standby)

WiFi is on all day, 2 phone calls 9mins, usage is mostly mail, facebook, messenger services.

The only thing I noticed, sounds strange if it has to do with it... is that I locked portrait orientation 2days ago.

It's been pretty well documented in here that being on wifi makes the battery drain problem all but disappear.   I too, spend most all of my day on wifi, at homer and the office.   I easily get a full day with 10 hours of usage on my phone.

Agree with Jameson. For most people, the phone being on WiFi is not a problem. Its when you switch to 3G. If you could, go onto 3G for the day and see how it goes.

Ive gotten 12 hours on WiFi with 2 days standby. The usage was surfing the web, emails and facebook. No music.

    On 3G i will constantly get 3 - 4 hours usage.

Yes agreed, I noticed this too, coverage here is quite bad at the moment.

Still strange, you should think WiFi uses more power, at least it did on my S2 before.

Issue is def LTE/3G related.  On wifi this is the usage i get.  Only about 3-4 hours was on LTE/3G mainly listenig to stored music and very light email, facebook, text... Majority usage was on wifi, youtube videos, browsing, text, email and just fiddling with thge phone.  Not sure there will be a fix for something like this since its a kind of a software and hardware issue combined, but its obvious this battery cant seem to handle the wireless data networks of our carriers.   Oh well, i guess we have to just live with it or return the phone.

ios 6.1 beta 4 .... Battery seems to be even worse with cellular usage perfect signal.. just texting and email.  Sad. Jameson was right   This is how it's gonna be...  I trusted apple products like no other because in my mind they were guaranteed to be great.  That is no longer the case.  Unfortunate. For them.

Very unfortunate I know but your still going to line up and buy the next iPhone when it releases right ? So what's the point.

Sorry was just playing the devils advocate

For me it feels like a screen consuming issue?

I use my phone during the night to monitor my sleep. It uses only about 1% per hour!!! Yesterday I've been running for an hour, Nike+ tracking, and listening music through iTunes Match streaming, it uses only 4%. When I check Instagram or play with Safari, I lose about 1% every 2 minutes.

Jameson, maybe you can help me out with this question. I am mostly on wifi at work and home, so my battery has been decent lately. But I'm wondering about the Cellular Data switch. If we mostly use wifi, does it matter in the least if Cellular Data is switched on or not? Will switching it off while connected to wifi save even more battery? If you're on wifi with Cellular Data on, will your phone still be searching for cell networks and using data in the background, etc? It seems like the only downside to not having Cellular Data turned on is that I cannot receive MMS messages, but everything else works just fine.

I'm still disappointed with the phone, but I've learned to live with how much I can use it and it's not so bad. I don't like compromising with such an expensive piece of hardware, but what else can I do? I will still probably get the new iPhone in 2 years time, but I won't be early adopting.

Do you run outdoors or on a tread? Are you on wifi when you use Nike+? If I run for an hour with Nike and listen to music I will lose at least 10% on 3G and 20% on LTE without fail. I also lose about 10% overnight if I don't plug it in.

Outdoor, on 3G. The most surprising was that I was listening to an album that was not on my device, so full iTunes Match streaming. Weird.

During the night I'm on airplane mode.

Actually Kenny... Absolutely not! Why would I buy something else from a company that screwed me? I'm stuck with this phone so I am using this phone until I can decide what's next for me. Don't assume that I'm lining up for anything. Not the case

Im not assuming anything and just to be clear , apple screwed me over with the iphone 5 too. It's extremly sad that i have such a beauitful device with bad battery life.

I only asked you because both you and i know it , people over here no matter how many times are screwed over are still the same people who are going to go out and buy the 5s  just to satisfy their bruised ego. So i was just checking with you. I for one , have lost trust and faith and definetly looking forward to the new bb 10 device.

I'm on the latest beta since this afternoon and SO FAR, it's been better. Note that I have been connected to wifi most of this time though. For me that's a new thing because I was never able to stay connected to wifi after putting the phone to sleep. Now my wifi stays connected and battery today was the best I've seen out if this phone since release day.

I am going to wait and see how the next couple days go.

At the moment, I am at 29%:

    Usage - 6hr, 6min

    Standby - 11hr, 34min

    Fingers crossed!

Also, I too am thinking there is something related to charging with the wall adapter vs USB. At first when I read people mentioning that, I thought they were crazy. But, yesterday's charge when my phone had great batter life, was charged via my iMac. Last night I charged my phone via wall plug and just took it off the charger. It went from 100% to 98% in 2 minutes and is still dropping rapidly as I continue to use.

    Something is odd there......
