Q: iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

Yes, it's mostly on wifi. This problem is so random. I lost 15% overnight. Then this morning, I lost another 5% within 1.5hrs by just browsing the emails notifications from this thread for a few minutes and doing the usual drive to work (Bluetooth). The same routine yesterday didn't even drop it off from 100%.

Do you back-up to iCloud?   Maybe on nights that the phone is working overnight, the battery drain is more pronounced?

    HELP

Nothing to do with battery life but please how do I delete myself from this thread. How many times do I have to read about how much a battery drains per hour or how to extend battery life. Surely among the thousands of replies on here every possible combination of time versus battery usage and every possible option for extending it has been discussed ad infinitum.

I no longer want my inbox full of mails saying the same crap.

lol Andrew, I was thinking the same thing about all these apple support emails I'm getting.  I'm killing my battery by reading all these.  But seriously, I think if you have a battery problem, the only fix is to keep getting your phone replaced until you get one that works.  Luckily I got one on my second try.  I charged it last night and unplugged it before I went to bed.  This morning it was still at 100% after 8hrs of standby.  Now I'm at 16hrs 19min standby, 1 hr 36min usage and I'm at 78%.  I can live with that.  It will easily get me through to my bedtime and I'll charge it overnight.  I think it's time for me to take myself off the subscription to this thread.

Good luck guys.  Get a new phone.

    Mark

no backup to icloud. There seems to be no pattern. One night it would drain 5% and the other it drained 15%.

Well, I got 24 hours almost exactly and went down to 1%.  I streamed a two hour movie over wifi (Star Trek: First Contact) using battery so I could drain it.  During those 24hrs, I had 6 hours and 41 minutes of usage.  Brightness is set at about 1/4 of the slider.  Notifications are on, email fetches every 15min, bluetooth is on, Cellular data and LTE is enabled.  If I hadn't watched the movie using battery, I think I would have easily got 36-48 hrs out of it.  I just wanted to drain it again so I'd get a complete charge overnight.  I'm getting pretty happy about my phone.  I hope you guys get as lucky as me and get a replacement or a s/w fix that will work for you.  I won't be upgrading to 6.0.2 or 6.1 until long after I read all the comments from you guys about it.

    Good luck,

    Mark

    Hi all,

I have been reading this post for a while and got some great tips on battery life and how to test it and prolong it.

I just wanted to chime in with my findings...

As per the earlier suggestion, after I unplug the phone from a full charge, I power cycle the device.

This seems to mak ethe battery drain WAY slower:

    1. Full drain, then full charge (overnight) - I got 6 hours usage and 16 hours standby

    2. Full drain, then full charge (overnight) then power off and on the device - I am at 6 hours usage and 16 hours standby - WITH 50% battery left!!

**NOTE 1 - Because I don't get usage stats after a power cylce, I just plug in the power cable for a second after I restart it, that will kick off your usage timer again.

**NOTE 2 - My settings and running apps were EXACTLY the same during the test periods, and I tried to keep the usage as similar as possible (2 hours total gaming, 1 hour web usage, 2 hours emails, 30 mins calls, 30 mins whattsapp) with LTE enabled, Wi-fi connected, in the same physical location/room (my office) so the coverage was the same.

Anyways, my battery life is now more than acceptable.  But I have to do a power cycle after each charge.

I assume that this means it is a software issue and can indeed be fixed..

    Fingers crossed for 6.1 release...

    Cheers,

    Ken

    Hi,

I'm on my 3rd iPhone 5 now.  A tiny speck appeared on my last 5 when the camera app, it almost looked like a little face. Oh and the battery couldn't seem to hold a charge for more than a day.  Thus the reason why I'm posting here.

I will update here with new (3rd) iPhone 5 diagnostics soon... IMG_1303.jpg

From my experience, you all have something to look forward to :) been battling this from the start. 7... Yes 7 replacements. Do I think it is indeed software!? Yes. I also believe its going to be shown in the 6.1 release that they did a pretty fantastic job and fixing a problem that was absolutely horrendous. :)

really? I didn't notice the improvement until I woke up and charged it to the top.  Hope it gets better for you.  I did a fresh clean install of it, and the difference is night and day in battery life.  Cheers

Just wanted to report.  I have over 38 hrs on this charge. Same settings as I mentioned before. Brightness is bumped up to 1/3 of the slider. Had one FaceTime call and a couple cell calls.
