Q: iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

    Hey Shahd,

I don't think I'm getting rid of any crashes -- if you look at your

    Settings > General > About > Diagnostics & Usage > Diagnostic & Usage Data

I still see crahses from yesterday -- but since the timestamp is in seconds, I can't easily figure out when it happened.

The one piece of advice the "Friday genius" gave me was: "if you see the delta between usage and standby not increasing when phone is on standby, then restart and see if that helps."

--not exactly rocket science there, but not obvious to all.

FYI, for anyone following along - my last charge was last night. Current times since last charge:

    Usage 1hr 11 min

    Standby 16 hrs 7 min

    battery: 83%

I'm planning on running the battery to 0 and see what the numbers bring. So far it appears to be ok today. I'm then going to charge via AC (not from computer) and se if it really takes 80 minutes to do a full charge. I'll continue to post my successes here. I know the Apple geniuses at NYC Upper West Side know about this thread. They're a good group of guys that want to find a fix.

i posted previously about this fact, but incase you missed it:

when iOS6 was first announced one of the new features was "cellular on WiFi". this feature was meant to compensate for weak WiFi by switching to cellular is the iPhone lost its WiFi connection while transmitting or receiving data.

this feature was present in the final GM developer relese of iOS6, but was absent in the public release.

even now after swapping out my original iPhone5 i am still plagued by power cosnsumption issues which accelerate once i am on 4g/LTE.

i have not experienced the increase in data usage you have however.

my current usage and standby time since last full charge is 2 hours, 3 minutes. my battery life is 57%. i was on 4g/LTE for approximately 45 minutes of that time...

    Your power management is AFU.

Your usage and standby times SHOULD NOT be identical!!!!! (unless you never put your phone into standby)

    Try this:

    1. REBOOT your phone.

    2. Put it into standby.

    3. DOn't touch it for 10 minutes.

Does the usage/standby numbers change to reflect the 10 minutes of standby?

Your power management has obviously crashed and this is THE PROBLEM that everyone is having. It seems to have manifested itself from restores -- but it also may be appearing randomly too.

    Try reboot and report back.

Why is my iPhone 4 draining on standby since upgrading to IOS 6?  I am not using LTE.

Jeremy - Thank you for your knowledgable posts.  You are extremely helpful and generous.  My question for you is, I did the DFU, RESTORE, SET UP AS NEW, REBOOT, and now I am having these "awdd" crashes.  I have two of them, and then three RESET COUNTER listings in "diagnosis and usage - data" section. Do you have any idea what else I can do?  They are sending me a replacement phone but I just am wondering if there's anything more to do in the meantime.  I am really worried this is just going to happen again on the replacement.  Very frustrating..Thanks!

The "friday genius" said iPhones are constantly crashing. All versions of the iOS. I gave him a dirty look... but he said, yes, they really do. That's why he encouraged a reboot before doing anything.

Can I ask what is "DFU"?

Are your usage/standby numbers identical? That seems to be the primary issue.

I don't think the awdd is a "crash log" - I think it is just logging something... but that's just a hunch.

This might solve my problem with my battery drain. It's lasting longer on 1% compared to the steady decline I've noticed. I'm still waiting for it to turn off and it's been on 1% for 15minutes now of me watching videos on youtube. Thanks for the tip!

Hey. My Standby/Usage times are different. Right now I'm at 77% standby: 7 Hrs and 22 mins. Usage: 1 hr and 55 mins. It seems like it's doing okay while it's sleeping but when I use it it drains before my eyes. Maybe I'm expecting too much? I don't know.... I don't think so.

DFU is when you put your phone into recovery mode and restore from factory settings. It's like a fresh fresh install of the software. That's what I've been told anyway. I'm no expert. That's for sure. The phone just dropped two percent writing this.... Not normal, I don't think.

Thanks for the useful information, Jeremy!  I haven't had the problem with my usage and standby numbers being identical, but I do seem to lose more than 1% an hour on standby.  I am now at:

    Usage - 2 hours, 27 minutes

    Standby - 1 day, 2 hours

and at 49% charge.  Is this due to the problem you have been describing?

Speaking of power management being AFU:  charged my phone to 100% at 11pm last night (first day of use, had run it down to 5% in the evening), left it unplugged in DND mode all night.  Battery was at 65% this morning, and usage showed 7 hours 23 minutes, standby 9 hours 22 min.  I've rebooted this morning, left it alone, and now I see that Usage is continuing to go up.  I don't understand - how can Usage be so high when the phone was doing nothing and I was sleeping, and continue to go up while I leave the phone alone?

    Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Try leaving the settings alone for a couple of days.  Use it and recharge as necessary but stop playing with settings.   You might be pleasantly surprised by Monday.
