    @Hansfull, any chance your original iPhone was a direct shipment from AT&T?


    Mine was and it has the worst usage of anyone I know. Trying to establish if perhaps AT&T had a batch not as good compared to people who preordered with apple for instance.

    So, I get about 5 hours MAX with about 24 hours standby doing basic 3G/LTE browsing on safari, checking email, some games, and looking at settings, etc.  Phone 1 = 2 restore and 1 DFU - Replaced phone - Phone 2 - set up new, contacts and calendar backed up from cloud - apps and music from itunes - have turned off main culprits for battery drain exept siri and bluetooth.  I have had applecare contact me to install the battery logger as well.  Both phones perform with the sub-par battery life.


    So MARY from applecare (senior advisor)  calls me back (from one of my previous applecare calls:

    MARY - so our technician thinks they may know the cause of your battery drain

    ME - oh yeah? what iis it?

    MARY - well, do you have a screen protector on your phone?

    ME - yes

    MARY - well they suggest removing it, as they think this may help improve the battery life and eliminate the issues you are having

    ME - are you f***ing kidding me??? tell your technician they should be ashamed of themselves for even having you call me back with such a ridiculous recomendation!!!!


    Honestly, is apple THIS pathetic?  I wanted to throw my phone at the wall I was so ******, I want to call the local news or CNN or anyone to expose how LAME of advice we are getting for our battery issues. 


    I have had every iphone, now have the 64gb iphone 5 and the newest the next 2 weeks, I will go to the genius bar MAX 2 more times, and get MAX 2 more replacements.  By the end of the 2 weeks, if either of those 2 replacements do not work, or apple does not have ios 6.1 out to fix the iphone 5 issues, I am officially done with apple, and will ditch the ipad as well! S3 will be my rebound phone.

    Yes, it indeed WAS an Att shipped phone.





    5 will get you 10 the new phone direct from Apple.  If not, you have very bad luck -LOL.  I know it's not funny when your in the thick of it, but if you don't laugh, you'll cry (or use a hammer on an expensive phone).

    @handsfull this doesn't matter anymore because your problem is fixed...but... I was wondering this, as well about how/why after a DFU restore your icloud username is there.  I think it's probably because when you're restoring your phone on itunes you are signed into that account in itunes?

    Regarding location services and battery life. Is there really much difference between tuning off all location services or turning of most of the individual items in location services. Does the battery drain if an application is on in location services but not in use?


    My iphone communicates with the cell tower about every three minutes for 5-10 seconds. Does anyone know what is being sent back and forth in these communications?

    any usage of the GPS hardware, drains the battery.

    I know this is a problem, i only pointed out a workaround to the problem.


    obviously doesn't mean it fixes the real hardware issue that the battery should last longer, but the difference with the LS on and off is enormous.


    My question is, I'm about to return this phone to Apple assistance, and wait for their report if it needs replacement or not.

    If this is a problem with ALL iphone 5's or just some of them with a defect on the battery? what's the deal?

    Typically pinging for location.  Could also include diagnostics & usage info.  


    Airsage and providers of data use it to relate how many people with smartphones are in what area at what time collect this location data to provide others (including yourself) with traffic congestion (check out the real time traffic in maps)....FWIW: google does it too...







    No one knows what the actual root of the problem is yet.  I am only using the data I've collected from my experience to say that the defect lies in the phone.  I would tell my friend/mother/family to go get a new one, as I did, because I've tried everything possible (you have to trust I'm not a meatball, and I'm competent to state everything actually means everything) and could not come up with a resolution.  The only correction was a new phone.

    I have not tested my 4 phones for useage time. I have only tested standby time. My standby times are good. Handsfull has a very good phone now. Do a google search under news and look at iphone reviews. You will see that there are not many negative stories considering so many phones have been sold.


    I think that severe battery problems are the exception not the rule. But this is just my opinion.


    There is an interesting story with test results from ilounge. They say that poor signal strength in a location can cause users to not meet the battery specs on the phone.

    Handfull, I wonder if there is anything one can do to reduce the drain from these 3 min episodes. They don't seem to do me any good. Can one turn anything off or get rid of some apps to reduce this?

    My IPhone 4 is at 94 % battery.  No Sim Card/ Only WiFi ... Usage: 34 minutes Standby: 1 Day 0 Hours.  I don't know if that helps anybody lol but there ya go

    iLounge may be correct.  Poor signal strength may just be a cause of more drain.  What I know is....I have a great signal all day long wherever I go although my city doesn't have LTE (yet....we're getting it in dec).  Drain from cell reception would IN NO WAY cause the rapid battery drain I was experiencing....even if I DID have a low signal....which I did not. 


    The drain I experienced was heavier than it should have been at all times.  In other words, it drained "slower" on wifi, but it still drained WAY FASTER than it should have while it was on wifi.


    EDIT:  to add....yes, you can shut down under settings/Privacy/location serv/system serv/traffic toggle

    NUFF SAID.   If that isn't conclusive proof....I don't know what is.  RECORD A VIDEO ON YOUTUBE AND POST A LINK IF POSSIBLE.....I'm sure Apple would love to get your phone and run tests on it.

    I just did something... I signed out of my itunes account on itunes...put the iphone in DFU mode, restored software - as soon as the phone restarted as new, i unplugged it from itunes, set up the phone from icloud backup (usually when you do this....either backup or set up as new - your username is in the icloud "username" section already because you were signed into that account via itunes.  I signed out of that on itunes prior to all of this.  So when I was prompted to enter my icloud username, the box was empty....I restored my phone from icloud back up... charged my phone to 100... it's still at 100% 43 minutes Standby / 22 minutes usage.


    I have NO idea if this actually did anything but when it sits at 100% this long....thats not normal for this iphone 5 that ive been using since release day... just saying... add it to the list of things to try if youre desperate.
