Q: iPhone 5 battery life is way worse than iPhone 4

I just got an iphone 5 and I restored a backup from my iPhone 4 so I have the same settings. But the iphone 5 drains way faster than my two year old very well used iPhone 4 which is running 5.1.1. Is it because of IOS 6? Just leaving it sitting overnight lost about half the battery. My iPhone 4 hardly uses any battery while it sits overnight.

Or do I have a bad battery on my new phone?

    Hi zoo tv,

I've had my Diagnostics and Usage set to "Don't Send" since I first set up the new phone and it hasn't helped this problem at all.

Moreover, by not sending Diagnostic and Usage info to Apple, we may actually be preventing Apple from seeing, understanding, and being able to address the problem.

peppersdad: i agree with you on that one, but my phone is not a toy, i use it for business, not much point of giving apple all this feedback if the phone is going to die on me in the middle of the day... and there is more, for the looks of it apple doesn't seem to care about this issue, we can jump up and down here all day, and not one sigle reply from them... i'm starting to think this is how it is and we will have to learn to live with it.

I may have something strange here.... I have been running for the last hour and still running on 1%?

This is strange.  Anyone else try this, i am trying to deplete batterry completely and them charge overnight good.  It just wond die now.  Seems maybe out of calibration?  Is that possible?

    @dankron13

Let us know how you get on. I'm just to the west of you in Beaudesert. Bought my iPhone 5 from Carindale apple store.

The phone is great, the LTE is exceptional in Brisbane when I see mates but this Battery life problem is just killing me. I really don't want to return my iPhone but if I have to I will.

Look forward to reading your progress.

Digglerdan, if you want an accurate battery reading try an app called Battery Doctor. Great app for monitoring and maintenance. I've used it on my iPhone 4 and iPad 3.

Holding at 1% does sound very strange though :-/

I thought the same thing. It takes 2-3 min to drop 1-2% but as soon as it gets to 1% it takes 10 min to die. And that's with me running every app I can for it to just die.

    Hi dankron13,

My phone is used the same as yours, and I too don't send diagnostic info to Apple. I was just pointing out that if no one sends Apple the particulars, Apple may have a harder time addressing the problem.

But as far as saying Apple doesn't care about this issue because it hasn't responded yet, let's cut the company a little slack at this point. The phone's been out for three days, two of which were the weekend.

Oh and also I noticed the charging is nowhere near as fast as my iPhone 4. It takes 10 min on my ip4 to charge 20% or so. But with my ip5 I've had it on the charger for almost an hour, charged from dead to 42% currently.

Today my iphone 5 lasted approx 20 hours of standby time, including last night, and approx 6 hours of usage time. I just finished my 3rd complete charging cycle and allowed it to trickle charge. I have been reading these post and texting for over 30 minutes now and i am still at 100%. This may be too early to say, but my battery seems to be doing what Apple says it will do. As long as my battery does better before the next charge then what it did this time I will consider this a small victory. They do recommend doing a complete charge from a dead battery once per month. Hopefully others will try this before they degrade a wonderful Apple product!

Omg! When I got to 1% I was there for like 30 minutes. I was playing games and texting and talking on phone trying to kill it but it wouldn't die.

My iphone 5 has been great except for battery life!  My full charge only supported 6 hours of usage with 20 hours of standby time.  Half of that usage was the mobile web, and the other half was texting.  My charge holds pretty well on standby.  I'm hoping the battery improves over time!
