iPhone 5: Touchscreen stops responding from time to time

Hi there,

am I the only one who has problems with the iPhone 5´s touchscreen? It simply stops responding from time to time after using it for a couple of minutes. The buttons work though. To "reactivate" the screen I simply need to darken the screen...meaning I just need to wait for it to go into standby mode, hard reset, shut it off or just press the top button. Anything that switches off the screen. After that it works fine again.

This morning I decided to reset everything and the problem still occured - even when I configured it as a new phone.

Just called Apple and they told me to ask my provider (they´ll probably tell me to send it in...problem is, that I don´t have another phone that supports Nano sims;)).

Has this problem occured to you too? I had similar problems with my 3GS but that was just because it was snow but the screen always worked when I waited a couple of seconds.

I have a similar problem but noticed it only happens when my phone is laying flat on the table charging. When set up like that, my touchscreen is not responsive or 50% responsive at best. I returned it to the apple store after dealing with a tech on the phone who told me to reboot/restore/etc. The Apple store couldnt find the problem so they replaced the phone. The new phone is also having this problem. Its an annoyance, but I am waiting to hear what others have to say before replacing this second phone.

Similar problem here. But I have not yet figured out a way to get the screen to respond again. It appears to be completely random.

I got my iPhone on launch day, September 21. Was able to activate it and restore content from my iPhone 4 to it, quickly. It worked perfectly for most of the first day, but now (on day four with iPhone 5) I've had at least six "dead touchscreen" moments, and they are becoming more frequent: the phone just stops responding to any taps or swipes -- sometimes mid-task. I can't type. I can't move anything on the screen. Can't even unlock the lock screen or shut the phone down using the final shutdown swipe. I just have to wait for it to start responding again.

I'm suspecting a hardware defect, and I'll be at the Genius bar first-thing tomorrow to find out what Apple has to say. I'll post an update afterwards.

In the meantime, I'd love to hear if anyone else is having this issue or if there's a solution short of replacing the phone.

I have the same issue. It's after you don't touch the screen for 1 minute it freezes up. Physical buttons still work. I think this is a IOS 6 issue. Hopefully theres a bug fix soon. It's almost as if, when in power saving mode, the iPhone thinks its asleep. Very strange. I wouldn't go rushing to the store to replace it. Wait for the next update.

Same thing here too... Before it would happen randomy then go away.

But today, it started ten minutes ago and will not go away. It will respont to one touch only then stop. I reset it and nothing changed.

I am going to back-up and restore, but I hope there is a fix. Might have to gat my carrier to get me a new one!

Yes same here the touchscreen is unresponsive to regular touch as my 4s I've had mine for a couple of days and thought maybe it was memorizing e way that I type and adjusting...not sure if this is the car but I did hear this is the ability of the phones memory...?

I am also having vets slow conectivity with Verizon in the SoCal area...something that never happened n the 4s to me, delayed responses on th links I've touched to browse etc.

Please let me know if anyone is having success or a fix for the issues thanks!

I just experienced same thing for first time. Had it a week today and touchscreen was unresponsive; then started doing crazy things on it's own then "dead" again. After a couple of reboots working for now, but not liking this at all. May have to go to local Apple Store tomorrow and see what they can do. Haven't had an issue with any other iphone.

Yes.

I have seen this problem here in Perth, Western Australia, on the Optus network.

I had my phone swapped at the Apple store and it has resolved the problem. For me the problem was related to when the phone was using the LTE network. Turning off LTE stopped the screen from becoming unresponsive.

I have posted two Videos on YouTube to show what my problem looked like:

Hello,

I had that problem as well and the apple support suggested to turn off the LTE-mode to have a running system and try to exchange the micro-sim by my provider.

THAT was not an option!

BUT it seems to solve my problem in the following way after trying a lot of possibilties:

In the menue properties/help (don't know the exact english word, because I run my phone in german)

I switched on the nice feature 'flash LED' by incomming calls, msgs, and push infos.

Today the flash feature was responding to different push notes very slowly.

By switching this feature off the LTE-mode-tochscreen-not-responding-problem disappeared.

We tried this on a other iphone, not having the metioned problem, and switched the LED-flash:

the problem appeared. Switching the LED-flash off: problem disappeared!

It seems to be a bug that the LED will hint Calls and MSGs in combination with the LTE mode!

treated my phone very hard today to double check, but its still ok.

@Apple:

Please fix that issue in the next update.

Hope, this helps you guys as well.

Hey there AMD75,

this is not a Problem with your iPhone, its is a defective charger!

I had the same Problem and had to replace my phone two times.

Take the Phone and the charger into the Apple-Store and show it to a genius-staff member.

The second time, They replaced my iPhone, the Charger and the cable. After this, no more problems while charging. DO NOT use that charger on any other products! It may harm them too.. give it back for disposure.

Hope you get this fixed too like I did!

I have the EXACT same problem here in Switzerland! I am connected to LTE via the carrier "ORANGE".

As soon as LTE is enabled in the options, I have issues with the Touch-Screen.

Got a new iPhone 5 from the Apple-Store last week and it worked there while testing.

However, back home and connected to LTE, I have the same **** problems again.

Is this issue ever going to be solved? Or is it the infamous Apple "In-Cell Display problem" which is now acting up with LTE also?

Most users do not have LTE in their region. Imagine if ALL users had LTE! This would cause a HUGE problem for Apple and they would be forced to react!

I would like to hear an official statement.

Is this caused by a Hardware-Fault in all iPhone 5 models?

Is this caused only on some carriers?

Can it be resolved with a Software-Update or a Carrier-Update?

I Pay allot of money to always have the latest Apple-Products. It's things like these are VERY frustrating indeed and make me want to consider another brand...
