Screen Saver on 10.8.2 Fails to Activate

I upgraded four Macs to 10.8.2 (iMac, 2 MacBook Pros and Mac mini) and the Mac mini is the only one where the screen saver stopped working. Too bad, because this one is our media center, hooked up to a projector and a small 12" display. The 12" display stays on, displaying the photo montage screen saver (Vintage Photos), and works really nicely as a photo frame.

I've tried a bunch of things, including repairing permissions, restarting, changing screen savers, and it started working once, but then it stops working again.

Seems like theres a bug in the timer that tracks mouse inactivity or something, as the screen saver fails to activate.

Any thoughts?

What worked for me was resetting the energy saver preferences to defaults.

After the ML install, I set the screen to sleep "never," and that apparently caused the screensaver to stop working. Setting the sleep time back to 15 minutes didn't work. Only after clicking restore defaults did it do the trick. There may have been a couple reboots and PRAM resets involved when I was trying to figure things out as well.

tjsung,

Re-setting energy savings defaults didn't help me...

It seems a variety of remedies work for a while for various people, then stop working (e.g. see corvairkid above). Let us know if your fix is "permanent."

I have a feeling that Apple is going to have to fix this one with an OS update. Everyone else should give their feedback to Apple to "encourage" them to do so.

So I decided to Google search this issue and lo and behold I'm not the only one having this problem; nice to know it's not just me! I purchased my MacBook pro with SSD (well, picked it up from the store) a couple of days ago, and I thought my noob self just wasn't setting up the screen saver properly.

This isn't the first quirk I've encountered the past few days; I have an Apple tv and it wouldn't turn off after the software update. Come to find out, that software update changed the off feature from using the center button to using the play/pause button; so intuitive, right?!? They could have at least mentioned that in the "what's new" screen after the update.

So to address some of the other characteristics that some of you are trying to match up: I have SSD, home sharing set up, so I can work with my Apple tv with airplay (although I haven't actually done the airplay through the MacBook yet, just my iPod).

Is there a way to find out if Apple is actually actively addressing a fix for the screen saver issue?

I just re-installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and then the supplementary update.

Figured what the heck.

Screensaver is working OK again.... so far... we'll see.

Will keep in touch.

Ken

PS: NumbersGirl... No way to tell what Apple Tech is planning to do about this... I've asked them... they don't say much. If anyone else hears anything, please let us know.

OK - just stopped working after 25 hours. This is the most strange and infuriating problem I have encountered in over 15 years of mac use. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

Looked at Console to see what might have changed over the last half hour, but couldn't see any particular clues.

I give up. Waiting for a fix from Apple now!
