After working perfectly since October 4th, it has stopped working again.

What worked for me was resetting the energy saver preferences to defaults.

After the ML install, I set the screen to sleep "never," and that apparently caused the screensaver to stop working.  Setting the sleep time back to 15 minutes didn't work. Only after clicking restore defaults did it do the trick.  There may have been a couple reboots and PRAM resets involved when I was trying to figure things out as well.

Re-setting energy savings defaults didn't help me...

It seems a variety of remedies work for a while for various people, then stop working (e.g. see corvairkid above). Let us know if your fix is "permanent."

I have a feeling that Apple is going to have to fix this one with an OS update. Everyone else should give their feedback to Apple to "encourage" them to do so.

So... I re-installed 10.8.0, screensaver working fine for over 10 hours. Then updated straight to 10.8.2 (no 10.8.1 + no supplementary update) and screensaver has been working correctly for the last 11 hours in 10.8.2.

    Hope that's it, fixed?

Will let you know if it changes.

Re-setting the energy saver to the default setting only made the computer go to sleep.

I like to run an iPhoto slide show screensaver when the system is inactive.

I agree with David that this will probably need an OS update from Apple.

In my opinion, we're just putting bandaids on the problem.

I have sent feedback to Apple about this.

So I decided to Google search this issue and lo and behold I'm not the only one having this problem; nice to know it's not just me!  I purchased my MacBook pro with SSD (well, picked it up from the store) a couple of days ago, and I thought my noob self just wasn't setting up the screen saver properly.

This isn't the first quirk I've encountered the past few days; I have an Apple tv and it wouldn't turn off after the software update.  Come to find out, that software update changed the off feature from using the center button to using the play/pause button; so intuitive, right?!?  They could have at least mentioned that in the "what's new" screen after the update.

So to address some of the other characteristics that some of you are trying to match up:  I have SSD, home sharing set up, so I can work with my Apple tv with airplay (although I haven't actually done the airplay through the MacBook yet, just my iPod).

Is there a way to find out if Apple is actually actively addressing a fix for the screen saver issue?

Please see my post above - I think it is a fix!

  • corvairkid Level 1 Level 1 (15 points)

I'm going to wait a couple of days Len, before making any more changes.

My fix lasted 4 days before failing again.

    Please keep us informed.

After two days back problems, the screensaver does not work, I'm going to install a new fresh osx, and hope it is resolved,

And then first test to see if everything continues to work,

    I will keep you informed,

I wouldn't bother with the OSX re-install. I tried a clean OS X re-install with no luck. I think it is a bug with 10.8.2 and will need a fix from Apple in a future update.

Let Apple know your issue through OS X feedback. I suspect they will eventually fix it.

  • Sjamex Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

I know, and I had them already sent feedback

But would just try it, If it does not work,  then I put my time machine backup just returned,

    is not very much work,

  • corvairkid Level 1 Level 1 (15 points)

I just re-installed Mountain Lion 10.8.2 and then the supplementary update.

    Figured what the heck.

Screensaver is working OK again.... so far... we'll see.

    Will keep in touch.

PS: NumbersGirl... No way to tell what Apple Tech is planning to do about this... I've asked them... they don't say much. If anyone else hears anything, please let us know.

Ken, I tried that back in the first few days of the problem, without any luck. Mine is still working at the moment after going back to 10.8 first, by far the longest it has ever lasted. About 24 hours now.

  • Len Gold Level 1 Level 1 (15 points)

OK - just stopped working after 25 hours. This is the most strange and infuriating problem I have encountered in over 15 years of mac use. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it.

Looked at Console to see what might have changed over the last half hour, but couldn't see any particular clues.

I give up. Waiting for a fix from Apple now!

  • corvairkid Level 1 Level 1 (15 points)

    ****... Mine stopped again.

Leaving more feedback with Apple, for what it's worth.
