When an Iphone 4S is upgraded to the new iOS, does it become 4G ready?
iPhone 4S, iOS 6
Nop. iPhone 5 has a LTE antenna built in, iPhone 4S doesnt. Therefore, no 4G for iPhone 4S or any other iPhone but 5.
These terms have been confusing people for some time. The iphone 4S works on a 4G (non LTE/HSPA+) network already--even if you upgrade to IOS 6 you'll continue using 4G (HSPA+). The iphone 5s take advantage of the faster data networks (4G LTE). Those phone will tell you if you're using the LTE network or slower ones.
@Glenn1961, I am so glad that you cleared this information up here. You broke this down like a fraction! This really helped me out a lot. Thank you so much, & Blessings to you! 🙂🙂
sorry y'all not so clear to me. I live in a fringe area where we got 3G approx 4 years later than the Tallahassee, Fl metro area. I was waiting until my area got 4g to get the iPhone 5. I have an iPhone 4 but I was just using a friends ipone 4s and it said 4g where mine says 3G, does that necessarily mean that the faster ( 4gLTE) is available in my area? or what does it mean? would I benefit from upgrading to an iPhone 5 or even 4s? thx
It means you have the faster HSPA+ available in your area. You would see a speed modest speed increase if you went from the 4 to the 4s. (Want to know how much? Both you and your friend need to download one of the many speedtest apps from the App Store, making sure you each get the same one, then test the speed of the connection.)
If you know someone with an iPhone 5, or other LTE capable phone on AT&T, see if theirs shows "LTE" instead of 4G. If it does you have it in your area. Or check the AT&T service map.
got it now I think, thanks to you both, love these forums,
tried the side by side, but AT&T was having a hiccup, both were miserable and unrepresentative of the speeds we usually get here. one benefit of living in a fringe area is we get the same technology, albeit years later, but there is NO load on it, so we see blazing 3G and cable modem speeds when it finally gets here. I'll wait to see LTE for my iPhone 5 thanks y'all
