help: keyboard layout mismatch

My keyboard layout corresponds to the keyboard in Keyboard Viewer, except of one key which is right underneath the Escape key (left to the 1 and above the Tab key). When I press it, it gives a § and with Shift a ±
The Keyboard Viewer suggests that this is the key to get a ` in combination with Alt. but it doesn't.
I tried different keyboard layout settings, but the one I am using right now matches best.

Any idea how to get that ` without having to use the Keyboard Viewer or Character Palette all the time?

Firstly, try setting your keyboard layout to the same keyboard version that you have. If the key that you type does not correpond to the key that is produced there you have a mismatch. Be aware that even though most English keyboards are practically the same they are NOT the same.

If you have the correct layout match then the Keyboard Viewer will appear EXACTLY the same as your keyboard.

Thanks, but I had tried all keyboard layouts available and there is not even one showing the ± and § symbols on the key underneath the Escape key as it is the case on my keyboard.
The Key works like it should as you can see above, but nevertheless, the keyboard layout that I am using in the Keyboard Layout Viewer shows a different sign on that particular key. How's that possible??

Hmmm… I never even considered you would have this problem with an in-built keyboard. I tried every single key layout and none of them has a `/~ key where the §/± key is (right below the esc key).

Are these the only keys that are out of place for you in that they are swapped around? If so then you might just want to consider removing each key and physically swapping them around yourself. The keys caps of your keyboard are removable.

Another, probably a more sensible first, option is to go to the store where you bought your PowerBook and ask them to sort it out. Even if you bought it from the Apple Store find a certified service centre where you can go and ask them at least.

I'm rather confused as to your key assignments. By the way, what language keyboard did you buy?

I'm not sure what keyboard layout this is, I would say international / Dutch. The point is that the keys correspond with what shows up when pressed. So swapping is not needed. The problem lies in the Keyboard Viewer not corresponding with the physical layout of my keyboard. I would like to type those ` and ~ but the only way to get them is by using the keyboard viewer. The §± key is not recognized by the Keyboard Viewer. When I press it, it does not show pressed in the viewer as is the case with all other keys. So it seems I am missing a key and I have one that is not visible in the keyboard viewer.

to give an idea, this is the first row (normal & Shift)
