Verizon iPhone 5 LTE delay?

Hello All-

I am having an issue with my new Verizon iPhone 5. I have very good LTE coverage in the Orlando area. However, I am noticing that there is a lag, or delay when trying to access the data connection after coming out of standby (and other times of data inactivity as well).

Some examples (from another user on MacRumors forums):

1. Using Siri from the Lock screen, it will take about 10-15 seconds to respond, then once it does respond, it will handle anything you throw at it until you lock the phone and let it sit for a few minutes again.

2. After unlocking, and trying to open any websites from Safari. Same thing, about a 10 second pause while it attempts to turn on the LTE radio, then boom, it works blazingly fast and again handles anything you throw at it.

3. Sending a text message. Same thing, right after you bring the phone out of standby from sitting for a few minutes, it will hesitate when sending the first message like it's trying to connect to the network, and then once it does, you can then send stuff with no delay.

It's really bad. I can't even properly stream music from iHeartRadio without it constantly cutting out. It's like the LTE chip keeps turning off and then you have to wait for it to kick back in. Once it works, the speed is fine, but it keeps turning off! I have reset network settings, rebooted, etc.

Any other Verizon users experiencing this? What about AT&T users? Should I take it to the Apple store and have it swapped out? 😕

Leemz,

I am the original poster of several of your quotes from MacRumors. I am still having issues with this, and I am ECSTATIC to learn that I am not the only one with this issue. I have called AppleCare, and they said talk to Verizon. I went to my Verizon store, and they said their phones on display do the same thing. I am hoping this is a software issue that can be fixed. I still have this problem. The Verizon store told me none of their Android LTE phones do this, which would indicate this is some type of software/hardware problem with the iPHone itself.

Also, just to add to this, it doesn't seem to be a problem when you disable LTE, or when on Wifi like you said. And to clarify further, the speeds of the LTE itself are blazing fast once connected, its just making that connection that takes a long time. I equated it in the MacRumors forum as if your phone is coming out of Airplane mode every time you unlock it.

GuitarDTO,

I was so happy when I found your thread on MacRumors because I thought it was just me! I am also glad that I am not in this alone! Especially because when I tried googling the problem, none of the reviewers mentioned it in their reviews. I do hope posting in multiple places (here, Verizon forums, and MacRumors) that this gets visibility quick.

I think this is a software bug that can be fixed but it is tied to a hardware issue. Since Apple elected to use a single radio, single chip design for LTE, it cannot run CDMA and LTE at the same time (reason why we can't talk and surf at the same time, still). Android phones implement two chips, or two radios to overcome this. Apple chose not to do this for design purposes. However, my suspicion is that the software is choosing to "listen" to the CDMA network while idle (for calls, texts) and then only fire up LTE when a data request is initiated. This wasn't a problem for 3G because it was still CDMA techology. This may also be the reason that AT&T users may not be facing this.

I really hope this issue gets resolved and I hope Verizon employees have raised this issue with Apple. We'll see how it goes!
